RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

So I recieved my GED scores today.

I passed...

I passed hardcore..

I got a perfect score in 2 subjects and the rest were nearly perfect. My lowest ranking was the 95th percentile. The second lowest ranking was 97th and the rest were 99th.

Apparently my total score corresponds to the top 1%

My scores are this:

language Arts - Writing: 800
Science : 690
Social Studies : 800
Language Arts - Reading: 660
Mathematics : 720

Total Score : 3670
Total Score Average : 734

A perfect score is 800.

RE: So I recieved my GED scores today.

Um excuse me but I have the right to brag.

After years and year of struggling through highschool, only to just barely make it to sophomore year when I should be a Senior? Years of emotional trauma inflicted upon me by my teachers and peers? Years of actually trying to get through this broken system we call school. Becuase I wanted to be free.

I am free. I am free and I am probably better off than most people who actually graduate.

So yes, I will brag. I will brag until my face turns purple and your ears fall.

Kindly go be a cunt elsewhere.

That's great, I don't blame you for being happy. I was pretty psyched too when I got a 1680 on my SATs but then I just remembered how it was only because my parents wanted a high score so I just forgot about it. Razz

Congrats!

Let's see them try to attach stigma to a GED obtained with near-perfect scores. Or at least give you a reason to gouge their eyeballs with a copy of your scores.

Excellent work.

They've changed the GED starting from the beginning of this year, though. I'm pretty sure the changes in at least a couple states including Maine aren't all that much, but I must be 18 to take it now. Hopefully when the snow thaws I can try my hand at pretests anyway.

RE: So I recieved my GED scores today.

Yeah I was able to get in just before the changes.

Here everything was getting changed. The test is now completely on computer. And the scoring system is apparently different too. And apparently now there is so clear "writing" portion, now writing is within all the subjects.

Those are what I know about the changes to the test. At least in Connetitcut.

So I recieved my GED scores today.

i took the updated computer version, there are only four tests now (math, science, language arts, social studies), and the scoring is now on a 200 scale.

my score put me in the top 1% in both math and science, and the top 10% in both language arts and social studies, passing "with honors" on all the tests.

the amazing thing about the GED is that the passing score is determined by scores that they get from a sample group of high school students, and you have to get into the top 70% to pass, meaning 30% of high school student's can't pass the GED which is pretty unbelievable considering how easy it is

i also took the SAT getting 710, 690, 530 on reading math and writing. percentiles are 92, 96, and 65.

these are test scores not grades, you don't have to go to school to take these tests or do well on them.

RE: So I recieved my GED scores today.

Congrats, those are great scores. Tests don't mean everything, but the can be useful for measuring some kinds of knowledge and ability.

The fact that quite a few people who drop out can do well on the GED, without additional studying, raises the question of, why all those years of school? If part of the point of education is to learn and demonstrate testable knowledge, why not give people the option to pass the tests at any time, at any age, and opt out of compulsory attendance?

Yes this means I'm done. Unless, of course, I chose to go on to college.

Which I think I will. Only because I enjoy learning, and I always hear how college is so much better. I may as well give it shot at least.

Course at the rate things are going with the job market and stuff and degree won't be entirely helpful. Too many people going and getting degrees to get a good job only to find there are no jobs.

So I recieved my GED scores today.

I'm thinking I could do well on the test without studying with the exception of math. Never was too great at it. I'll take the pretest and see if I really do need to brush up on it, because acing this without studying would be both awesome AND a vindication of the fact that I never really bothered to study in school anyway.

Here's more information on Maine's new high-school equivalency test. Basically the legislature didn't like the new changes to the regular GED and so they replaced it with another company's test, along with 7 other states.

http://bangordailynews.com/2013/09/14/ed...ency-test/

"The state has contracted with Educational Testing Services to provide its High School Equivalency Test, or HiSET, program starting in January 2014. The new program will cover the same academic ground as the GED program, but will cost less and give the state flexibility in how to administer the exams."

...

"Though there is no cost to the individual test taker (Maine covers the price of high school equivalency tests), the new GED would have cost the state $80 per test battery. That’s twice as much as the state pays for each battery, which is a test packet for one individual that includes exams on reading, writing, math, science and social studies."

"By comparison, HiSET costs $50 per battery and includes two free retests. It can be offered by pen-and-paper or electronically, is aligned to meet current educational expectations and is targeted to adopt Common Core standards over time, according to Amy Riker, national director of HiSET for ETS."

“The test is normed on the high school juniors and seniors of 2012,” Riker said Friday. “We’ve partnered with the Iowa Testing Program on this, and we’ll update on an annual basis, using high school juniors and seniors so that test is always reflecting what’s going on in the nation’s high schools.”

"Maine is one of seven states to contract HiSET for its high school equivalency credential program. Many states began looking for other options when GED partnered with Pearson."

"Gail Senese, Maine’s director of adult education and family literacy, said the state was having problems meeting the new, strict standards established by GED Testing Services ahead of the 2014 update."

I just might take it online!

So I recieved my GED scores today.

I also passed with "honors" on my GED tests. Getting really high scores isn't really that hard. I did notice that most people who do do the program however, are people that kinda struggle with it, and they stay in it for weeks, months, or in some cases even years at a time being prepped for the test. I was only in the program for around 2–3 weeks.

Grats, nonetheless.

And wait, there are changes being made for the GED program like having to be 18+ to take it? Here in my state, you have to be 18 to drop out, and now they're possibly changing the GED to where you'd need to be 18+ to take it? That's so retarded. It's probably the pro-compulsory schoolers who are trying to decrease dropout rates. Rolleyes

And I agree with you, xcriteria. First, allow kids to get to the basic levels of all important subjects, and if they don't want to go keep going further into school they can have the option of taking the tests and see how they do. I'd be open to that. Probably way less years in school and more time being able to do things you actually love and care about. Thumbsup

RE: So I recieved my GED scores today.

Yes, the test was way too easy. For writing, I was lucky, i got a very very good prompt. Something like "education happens outside school, describe a time you learned something outside of school" I used my interest in the universe, cosmology, astronomy, astrophysics. Which I've used a lot of resources on the internet to learn. Social Studies and science are all common sense. Reading tests are the same no matter what level you're at, what test you take, they're all the same. And Math? Well, it was pretty simple math. the basics, a bit of algebra. So yeah, it's an easy test.

As for cheating? Well that's impossible. The first test, the first day that was, hmm, if i recall correctly, the writing test and I believe science. Now this is impossible to cheat on as I was the only person at my entire table to show up, no one next to me to cheat off of. As for the next day? Social studies, reading and math, there were other people at my table. but they were only there to take the math test, the reason being is because they had failed their last try. It wouldn't be worth my time to cheat off them. besides, I have good eyesight, but not that good.

As for lying?

Make that two.

RE: So I recieved my GED scores today.

Yeah. I remember trying to get close to a crush by insulting the things she likes. But, I did that because I didn't have the social skills to approach her normally. It was my way to talk to her without being shy. There's barely any shyness on the internet, so I doubt it

Of course, that was in 5th and 7th grade. How old is the guy?
