RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: Purpose of admins & moderators

I think brainiac would make a good low-level moderator, DoA would be the mod with a stick up his ass and no leniency on the rules. Sub, Chanku, and I would be pretty good at following the rules and being involved in the threads.

The less you try to control things, the less you need to.

The only thing you must fear is fear itself. Course then you cant fear fear because fearing fear goes against the whole point behind fear of fear because you are doing what you fear and creating a frightfully fearful paradox of fear. Fearful huh.

Purpose of admins & moderators

As fun and riveting as it would be to act schoolish (def: authoritarian), I don't exactly have any rules to enforce, nor would I want to. I warn people off because I want to see more legitimacy in our movement; braniac's pseudotrolling is nothing I'd ban him over. In fact, I probably wouldn't use the ban function at all - I'd be more concerned with moving threads to their correct locations.

Purpose of admins & moderators

You do realize that talking about mod privileges makes it that much less likely we'll ever get them, right?

I'd ban everyone who doesn't like Doctor Who or anyone who talks about the color blue. And whoever likes sushi gets banned, too. So I'll be a terrible mod. Don't pick me, even hypothetically...

...What? That's a misconception; sushi isn't actually raw fish - in fact, the only thing that all sushi have in common is that they are made from rice.

TIL that there are two different types of sushi outside of 'Merica.

I'm not a fan of rice either though, but that's mainly in part because of burnt rice that ends up on your plate. Rice is fine, but burnt rice ruins the whole fucking plate of rice...just like rotten apples.

RE: Purpose of admins & moderators

In my cultural cuisine we have a raw ground beef food. It takes about 2 hours to prepare however, as the ground beef is mixed with tons of spices, herbs and other dry flavoring stuff. Then somekne kneads it for two hours while occasionally adding a little water to keep it from being too dry.

Tastes real great but is absurdly spicey. It'll make you cry just eating it. But thats why a yogurt drink is served with it, since the drink(or specifically, yogurt) really neutralizes the spice or at least drops it down to a tolerable level. Another option available is putting your piece on a piece of lettuce, though it doesmt help much and just gives it a crunch and the benefit of lettuce.

Its made on one large tray and given out in small portions that are rolled up, and eaten by hand.

Obviously due to its nature, you cant ever find it in stores...

If I were a mod I would split this thread.

Purpose of admins & moderators

Back on topic. Fuck all you people wanting to be mods. I became a mod in a game by being picked from the player base (we have a small player base) by senior mods for being awesome, not by volunteering for the job. If Soul wants mods she'll ask.

I got picked to be a mod simply because I was one of the first people to sign up at the forums...both times.

The first time I did spend some time just being nice to people for no reason, ahhh the golden days, but the second time I was picked for knowing what I was doing and being friends with the owner.

Purpose of admins & moderators

So, that settles it. I will make Sushi a moderator on SS!

(Sushi is my dog's name)

lol @ you guys who think being a mod is cool. It's not. Even having the power to choose other people to give power to is a pain in the ass. I'd really rather just not go there.
