RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

"popluar kids"

My logic surrounding popular kids (jocks, sluts etc. not kids that are popular in like, the science group or whatever) has always been simple: They all have inflated egos of themselves that allow them to justify any wrong doings.

As for what makes someone popular, I don't honestly think this question is answerable.

RE: "popluar kids"

The movie, "The Breakfast Club" touches on some of the reality behind school sub-cultures. Each group forms pretty much because of some commonality such as math, sports, shop, etc.

The popular kids usually have access to something that others find attractive such as looks, money, clothes, athletic ability, etc.

When I was in High School, there were four of us who had different full time second shift jobs (>40hrs./week). For us, the high school sub-groups seemed rather trivial because we all had an outside perspective.

When you consider the age segregation of school, it starts to become evident that most students are prevented from developing healthy interaction with anyone outside their own age by this segregation. In addition to failing to develop healthy social skills, unhealthy ones are developed as students begin to look for all their social needs only within their narrow group. This accentuates the importance of the group. Like a tribe or a gang, the group can come to dominate one's perspective.

The school "factory" is made more manageable if students, like cattle, remain in their designated groups.

She means the kids who are considered 'better' than everyone else(cheerleaders, jocks, preps,etc.). Timf made a awesome point.

"popluar kids"

Like Herr Timf said, it becomes irrelevant when you take a look at it from an outside perspective. Why? Because the value of the "popular kids" influence becomes near worthless in the larger picture of reality as a whole. It's like considering the penny to be akin to a dollar inside a small group, but then you step out into reality and a penny is pretty much worthless.

I dunno, I mean we have cheerleaders and 'jocks' at my school, but they don't act like they're better or anything. All the preps that were in my middle school are going to private schools now.

Is it possible for a school not to have a popular group?

"popluar kids"

I'm not sure. Probably. My school does though. They all act like they are better than us and some of them are cheerleaders and the sporty kids.

RE: "popluar kids"

Studies have shown that popular kids are generally more sociable. Attractiveness and athleticism helps. As they get older some might get superiority complexes.

I just simply like to call them the biggest faggots in schools. I pity the fools that actually call them "cool" or "want to be part of/like them".
This is also one of the most overused and worst clichés in TV Shows/Movies, where the results are mostly cringeworthy for me...

My school's popular group is consistent of everyone but me, with very few exceptions. Not that I mind.

"popluar kids"

To be honest, the "popular kids" was more prevalent at my middle school than high school. God, the people during middle school were terrible.
