RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Ughhh, I hate that one too. It's so annoying.

Hey, don't hate on that guy. He probably doesn't give a crap about the actual commercial, after all.

Back to school...

I was looking though some flyers and I found this Staples one which was full of stupid Back to School ads! Everyone just seems to care about sending their kids to school. Constantly reminding them of it. Forget all the stress school does on a child's mind! Summer vacation has always been similar to paradise to me. Why? Because I was free of all the stress, problems and bullies of school for 2 whole months. As a child I always made the best of my two months off, but back to school ads popping up during my favorite Saturday morning cartoons didn't help. It still pisses me the fuck off. And besides, the stuff I have now is perfectly fine! I don't even need school supplies since I don't do any school work in the first place.

I'm starting to think that the only reason parents like school is so their kids can finally get out of their hair.

You're exactly right! To them, school's more like a fucking daycare center rather than a place for them to learn. Why have kids if you're not gonna take care of them?

Back to school...

I do believe many parents see schools as daycare centers rather than institutes meant to provide access to knowledge and education.

And the system seems to conform around such a thought by justifying it by "At least they aren't out on the streets". At least being on the streets would teach them their limit in behaving stupidly(Jail, getting beaten up, shot, stabbed or even killed). It's like saying lets keep the trash in so it doesn't smell outside.(Which would prevent the sanitation workers from being able to collect the trash as well)

I guess, in the end parents really don't care about their kids as much as they think they do. Blindly trusting strangers to nurture their children rather than to do it themselves. Then again, some parents have jobs and sometimes there's other place to put the kids. It's still pretty shitty, though.

Yeah, I agree with that. On the streets you can actually learn something and gain a sense of independence but oh wait! We don't want that! We need good little docile workers who do what they're told! Slaves to freed our greed, add money to our pockets, an extra pool for our backyards and a gold toilet seat! Critical thinking won't pay the master, I guess.

The schools itself are the "streets". There are some serious problems that go on in my school, such as fights, arguments, etc. The hallways, by the way, smell like urine. It seems adults think that children are absolutely safe in school, when in reality, it's the exact opposite.

No surprise. Or say, for that matter.

There are plenty of parents who use their control over their children as a method of compensating for their own insecurities.

Not always related but regardless of parenting style the reasons why people actually want to have kids are vastly selfish in nature, e.g. someone to love them unconditionally, take care of them when they are older, make them happier.

Mhm. It's parent's who complain about how their boss is an asshole then they go home and treat their kids the same way. It's just the cycle. As kids they were treated the same way by parents and treachers. Now they're "big, scary adults" and they wanna take their frustrations out on the easiest/smallest target.

And someone to never question them, always "hold their respect", do their bidding (e.g. get them a beer while they're sitting on the couch watching sports).

It pisses me off so much that many adults think that video games, TV shows, movies, and even books and literature are the reason to blame for the violence that happens at school. No, for god's sake, the violence is caused by bullying and the fact that school is basically prison! If only these damn lawyers and politicians could see what goes on in schools....

I know, right? I especially hate it when people blame video games. Um, like there wasn't any violence whatsoever BEFORE video games existed? -.- I can't believe I risk getting killed in a shootout at a place I should be 'learning' at.

RE: Back to school...

Every and any media could just as much be "responsible" for violence. I think most people are just afraid because it's become a child's newest past time which, rightfully so, could teach a person a thing or two. People just fail to realize there are other elements to them them the violence
