RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

My back is hurting from all sitting at school!

At my school we have one and half and hour classes without breaks, so we literally sit for 1 hour and 30 minutes and then get recess which lasts 15 minutes.

What do people here recommend to avoid these back problems. Asking for a break is not an option.
Posture, positions, techniques, tricks etc?

What kind of chairs/desks do you sit at? That can make a huge difference. Straight/flat hard wood isn't comfortable and can cause back pain. If that's the case, bring pillows?

The chairs are made of plastic and the back support bend backwards. So when you sit you fall a little back it doesn't support it that much :( If I bring pillows people will laugh :(

So you actually can't use the backrest at all because it bends too far back?

Not that far! Biggrin But's they aren't comfortable :(
I'll just have to keep on crossing my legs, wipping the chair backwads and just shake a bit while sitting. -2 points goes to schooll.......

RE: My back is hurting from all sitting at school!

who cares if people laugh at you for bringing a pillow, just explain why and before you know it more kids will be doing the same...but that also runs the problem that people might use the pillow to sleep and then the administration bans pillows from skool, but i still say do it.

The chairs in our new building are like that, but they're more comfortable than the ones i've been sitting in for years now where you get a piece of wood welded to a chair basically, if you're lucky you'll be in a class with mostly the square desks welded on, i like those because i can use the support arm as a back rest and still be able to efficiently do my work...but typing on the computer is a little tougher since it wasn't designed for that (the little ones provide little room for the computer so i guess it was kind of designed for laptops)

Do you know what I'll do. I'll squeeze the pillow into my trousers and go to school like that. Biggrin Nobody's gonna see a big pillow sticking out my ass.
I am going to think about it. Maybe IO could just take bring a more fluffy jacket and put that under my FAT ass Biggrin

RE: My back is hurting from all sitting at school!

These things amirite? and assholes like to bend the top part down because the metal bar that supports the back only goes up just over those holes. The bolts in that picture look like they're higher up than the ones we had at my High School though. Maybe they fixed it in newer models.
There were these other type of desk that was a whole lot less common but they were way worse. They had a large square desk on the front and no bar on the right side that you cold lay on to sleep. Plus the racks underneath went all the way up to where you couldn't kick your feet up on them like the desk pictured below and the backs had absolutely zero support because whoever designed them decided that plastic triangles molded into the chair would be enough to keep high schoolers from breaking it. It resulted in the entire thing bending backwards from the middle of the giant hole in the base of the chair after someone leaned on it wrong or sat on the top and bent it back. Pieces of shit.

edit: Here's a picture of the second one. It almost identical except it's missing the giant piece of shit rack that covered the whole back end. We had these in the auto shop classroom and we took a cutting torch to all of them so there was space underneath for your feet.

RE: My back is hurting from all sitting at school!

My school has stools in most classes. I assume they arent new, because a few have colapsed under my wieght. Lol. They are really tall stools, and I have to climb a bit to get up there. A few classes have chairs like the ones pictured earlier, and they are bent really back as well. It is so far back that I am close to lieing down when I lean back, but hey, it is convenient for sleeping in class. I always bring a pillow to those classes, and it is much comfier. The next day, half the class had them too.

I was wondering where my chronic backaches were coming from, and confused as to why they didn't occur during the summer.

Did your house burn yet? Well happy Helloween!(Why would I waist my time typing this on Halloween?) I'll give out imaginary hugs later.

Congratulations humanity, because you refuse to let go of the old and evolve you actually make people believe in 2012. Not only that, but you're the only species on Earth that were able to make it possible, now we get to sit until we die because we couldn't get to Mars. We have failed as a society and don't deserve our gifts to survive for this long. Maybe this is why dinosaurs are extinct, we sure aren't any better than the dirt you say we're created from. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla...DvwSOFto#! Noo

My back is hurting from all sitting at school!

Why is it that everything a smart genius says always is good. Like "“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
- Albert Einstein

How do we know that's a good thing? I mean I like Albert and the quote, but what if it's wrong and misleading.

happy Halloween! =@Smile
