RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Well, hmmm....how to explain this? You just asked me a trick question Smile I will think about it and then I'll get back here!

While, I'm thinking, let's discuss my new theory Smile I think that maturity greatly depends on personality types. For example, thinking vs. feeling or judging vs. perceiving. I think that thinking and judging people could be naturally more mature that feeling or perceiving types. It's just a thought. What do you think?

IDK, but about the dangers: I am like that since being a toddler. Was I mature when I was four? Five? Seven?

Probably, there are such children. Speaking of MBTI's, I don't know if that's scientifically proven, but I think it's correct. I mean, I am a feeling type, I cannot figure something out by thinking, only by feeling. If you understand? I have to feel something to make a judgement about it. Thinking types, on the other hand, can have an opinion about something only by thinking, so they don't have the need to try stuff out to get to know the world and make a judgement. I think.

You'd be surprised. I don't know how it is where you are, but here, at 18, we've finished school and are either working or in college - either way we've moved out and are making out own way, as adults, living without our parents. I think that because that's the norm, it's just what we do, and we don't think it strange. What is strange is hearing of places like England, where apparently you stay at home til you're married. The majority of my friends and I were moved out by 17.

RE: 18 is adult?

In my country people also move out of their home to go to college, but that doesn't make them mature. In fact, most people that came to my town for college are much more immature than people who still live with their parents (they party all the time, get drunk into oblivion, are very easily influenced by peer pressure etc.)

RE: 18 is adult?

Fuck being "mature". It usually means being a stuck up prick who thinks the amount of time they existed means anything.

I am responsible, kind, friendly, confident, sexy, goofy, and probably childish. I'll never be "mature" fuck that.

There simply are none. At one point 13 was considered an "adult".

Adult was, is , and will always be a relevant term.

Most people above 40 years of age look down on 24 year olds as kids. Not as equals.

RE: 18 is adult?

The concept of maturity is...idiotic. Technically a person stops growing in their mid-twenties. But I've seen 13 year olds that are more mature than 19 year olds and even 50 year olds.

18 is adult?

I think that as soon as a person enters puberty, he/she should be considered an "adult." In all the ancient civilizations I remember, that's been the standard point of adulthood.

Also, for all the Christians out there, the mother of Jesus would have been 12-14 when she gave birth. Just sayin.'

18 is adult?

The line between teen and adult to me is really becoming moot. For example, I know a lot about history, I know how to do things which are considered "adult", hell, I even know how to pay bills (to an extent). Yet because of a little age barrier, I'm not allowed to be free.

To be honest though, I can't consider myself "fully" adult. I'm unfamiliar with living by myself in my own place, as an example. I don't know how to pay taxes. There are still many things for me to learn. I just think that the line is, to an extent, pure hogwash.

Yup. The same with sex being at 16, but you can't watch porn until you're 18.
