RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Some stuff
I engaged in a discussion about the freedom to learn outside of school with my dad, and he brought up a few good points:
1. If there were no school, what if a 5-year-old decided he wanted to learn about Teletubbies or stuff like that?
2. If there were no school and a 5-year-old decided he wanted to learn about math, reading, science, etc., who would teach him? His parents aren't always there to teach him - what if they both have jobs?
3. How would one learn outside of school?

Re: Some stuff
I don't believe we should ABOLISH school just make it non-compulsory. that would mean most of the little kids would still go to school because they are still enthusiastic about it and as the grades get higher and higher you would undoubtedly have less people. you could probably totally eliminate high school. by then most kids are mature enough to make decisions on their own. I probably would have quit after 6th grade maybe 5th.

Re: Some stuff
I was thinking that Kindergarden up until 6th grade should still be kind of mandatory. I mean, they're teaching you the basics of life in those grades. Basic math, reading, writing, spelling, and stuff that's really important. I mean, right now, it's not a BAD model for elementary kids. I mean, aside from some things, like forcing kids into classes that their friends arn't in and stuff, it's not bad.
They learn, they enjoy learning, it's in a safe, fun enviornment, and it's all important stuff. Beyond that, though, I think things need to be changed. But, at 6th grade, kids at least get a taste of the different areas of the world, learn their preferences for certain things, and are given a direction that they can explore in.
But elementary school is still important, and I do think that it's important to get the kids there whether they want to be there or not. Again, the fundementals of life are taught there, in a working way.
Improvements that could be made are smaller class sizes, more freedom in class and teacher selection, better school lunches, and a more advanced curriculum for the kids that want it (Advanced classes).

Re: Some stuff
School wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so long, 12 years. Take off the high school years and I think people would love to go to school. You don't even have to make it optional.

Err, there's middle school kids that wouldn't wanna go back to school and same to the elementary school. The grades after 5th grades needs revamping and school shouldn't waste too much time.

Re: Some stuff
My attempt at debunking this...
1. If there were no school, what if a 5-year-old decided he wanted to learn about Teletubbies or stuff like that? Then I guess he would learn about teletubbies ;D And that means he can't learn anything else
2. If there were no school and a 5-year-old decided he wanted to learn about math, reading, science, etc., who would teach him? His parents aren't always there to teach him - what if they both have jobs?
Parents are the only way to learn through outside of school? Come on, we all know we learn things outside of school very easily...
3. How would one learn outside of school?

I have no idea, but, even anti-school people forget the literacy rate before public school even existed. Here's an often quoted statistic: In 1850, the literacy rate in Massachusetts was 98%... only private schools existed back then.
Read this.
A pro-schooler on some blog said, "Well maybe the literacy rate back then was sufficient to live on the farm, but it's different now." Not so. People in 1850, and all the way back to the revolutionary war were reading more than people are now. Our education in this country has supposedly gotten better, but percentage wise, less people read now than back then. This was before all our computers, textbooks, rigorous classroom schedule, and a $500 billion budget for public education.
John Gatto wrote something about how many books of famous authors like Hemingway were being sold. People back then (including children) were reading some very challenging books, but now we have bullshit like Harry Potter and Twilight as best-sellers in this supposedly enlightened society.
And to add my opinion, I don't think school should be compulsory even for the first grade. Somehow, people were learning to read and write back then without mandatory public school, and it was working.

It's simply because that they are constantly aware of what's around them trying to discover the world around them using their hearing and their eye in order to learn how to read while their neurological-psychological development at their ages helps them learn what they are seeing. It has been observed that parents obviously talk about words and using body languages that helps the baby determine what the word while the baby brain use the visual imagination and observation to guide on the meaning of the word. People who have hearing problem since birth have been observed to have literature problems longer than those who doesn't have severe hearing problem. The hard of hearing people take so many years trying to study the languages by learning using their own technique if they can do so and they have to struggle finding out what to say and shit like that. You could go visit an deaf university and an university with hearing people in order to find out more about this issue.
Edit: I just found out the science research that I was looking for in order to put into the argument against school essay.

They teach Teletubbies stuff at school?
But in general, there's the internet, TV, library, ask other people... and it's not like school will completely NOT EXIST anymore. Ideally it'd still exist, but be optional and have a lot more choice involved. Like libraries, just with teachers on duty. And optional courses. Like university. Or something.

Get someone else to teach him, or use the internets, watch TV shows that teach stuff, use the library.

Of course. My point is that it would be THAT much better even if only 4 years were taken out.

Or all of these years should be optional. Literacy rates was higher before compulsory school started.
