RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Prom and other school functions

What do you think of them? They can be fun, if they were not taken seriously.

I started this thread mainly because my prom is coming up. I'm a juniour in high school, and I'm going with some friends. I'm happy, and even before I arranged to go with some friends, I wouldn't have minded going alone. I had my dress and I wouldn't have to deal with drama or "matching". Yes, some couples want to match. But people around me are obsessed with finding dates. Don't get me wrong, if a nice guy asked me out, I'd say yes, but I'm not desperate or anything. Guys are finding creative ways to ask girls out, and when people ask me who I'm goind with and I reply, "some friends", they look at me like I'm some pariah and tell me why I need to get a date and why I'm an antisocial loser who needs to grow up.

I hate the whole trend. I hate the fact that only guys can ask girls. If there was a guy I was even remotely interested in at my school, I wouldn't mind asking him, but no, that's not right. I hate how people look down on those who are find going without dates as losers or people who couldn't attract anyone. I'm very secure with what I'm doing, and I wouldn't be typing this if people would just shut the fuck up and leave me alone. I don't want a blind date, I'm not a desperate loser, and I'm not a lesbian (no offense to lesbians). I'm going with some friends and we're renting a limo and going out to eat, and you're saying it's not as fun as having a date? Excuse me, but that's more than enough for me.

Well, what are some of your experiences, and do you think I'm being stubborn? I'd say yes if a nice guy asked me, but I don't want any drama. What's wrong with wanting to have fun at prom and not stress out over everything? Is it really worth it to stress out so much and make it a "perfect" night? I don't even work that hard in school anymore, so why the hell do people expect me to do it for some dance I don't care much for? We might even ditch it after 2 hours andgo party in some clubs and smoke weed and sky divehang out at the cinema, park, or anything remotely interesting.

Proms fucking suck. You'd have to pay me tons of gold to merely attend the prom for 5 mins.

My friend and I were going to go as a cross-dressed couple and stage a lot of lulz.

And then we found out they charge money for the damn thing.

And then we said "Forget it".

Let's do the time warp again!

Me and some friends skipped our prom and played star wars in a taco bell parkin lot with sticks.

Still more fun than some prom would have been and I saved over a hundred bucks and tuxedo money.

Well, the only reason I'd go to prom is for the after parties, but I just skip prom and have a giant after party.

Re: Prom and other school functions

I was going to go to my friend's prom with her but her mom yelled at her and intimidated her into not going at all.

I didn't have a prom. I was in this home-schooling organization, and there were four of us graduating that year, and none of us gave a crap about dancing.

I left school before the formal came up and after seeing the pics on FB it looked like a bunch of 2 year olds in suits and whores with too much make up on, all in a clusterfuck of fail. Anyone that takes that shit seriously needs to get a life.

Re: Prom and other school functions

Guys in my school have found really creative ways of asking girls to prom.

- One had a cop pull over the girl he wanted to ask, and the cop gave her a bunch of fake traffic violations and at the end, the guy asked her to prom and revealed she wasn't actually in any trouble.
- One guy rang the doorbell of the house of the girl he wanted to ask, and when she opened the door, he drove a remote-controlled RC car with flowers and a card to her.
- In the middle of lunch, a guy went up to the table of the girl he wanted to ask with a guitar and played her a song asking her to prom.
- Someone else got a bunch of balloons and gave four of his friends balloons with the letters "P, R, O," and "M," and had them give them to her in that order, and at the end he gave her a balloon with a question mark on it and a bunch of flowers.
- During Battle of the Bands (a concert where various rock bands at the school who didn't suck got to perform), in the middle of a song, three of the band members on stage put down their instruments and took off their jackets, revealing shirts underneath: one had the name of a girl the guitarist wanted to ask, another had the word "prom" on it, and the last had the phrase "with me?" on it. The guitarist jumped off stage with a bouquet of flowers and gave them to the girl.
- One guy hid in the the trunk of his friend's car, and his friend drove him to the house of the girl he wanted to ask. Since she was being picked up to go bowling with them, she didn't object to getting in the back seat of the car. The guy in the trunk punched through the door-type thing in the back that all cars have in the back seat, giving her a bouquet of flowers and asking her.
- Another guy left a girl a note telling her to go to the band room. When she got there, the guy faked a heart attack, and one of his friends he asked to go along with said, "oh my god, he's having a heart attack! We need a hot girl now!" When she approached the guy faking the heart attack, he ripped off his shirt, revealing another shirt underneath that said, "prom?" and everyone in the band room starting playing this one song (I forgot what it was, but it was a love song of some kind).

There are times I really do want to go, but most of the time, it's just "meh". But, I'm going anyway... my mom said I was going no matter what. I was going to find myself a date, and have fun. I don't know why. I really don't know why, but I find this more disturbing and offending than a terabyte of rape stories and shock images. So your mother is basically using the prom as an excuse to "cure" you of being asocial...? This really reeks of parent forced relationshits, I suppose she's also bugging you day and night to "OMG LOLOLOL GET A BUIFRIND I ALLSO HAD HUNNIDZ OF DESE WHEN I WAS UR AGE DERP DERP DESU".

Sometimes mothers force their daughters to go to prom so they can live their dreams through their kid. It's disgusting. Thankfully, my mom's not like that. She let me choose, but she did warn me not to skip out simply because I don't have a date. Honestly, if I weren't going in a limo with friends, I wouldn't have minded just showing up alone. I'm not as insecure as she was at that age. But I sometimes see mothers forcing their daughters to be the popular, pretty girl she wasn't, and I also find that disturbing.

My school has this thing called 'Grad' this year for the grade eights...it';s not until June, you guys, June. And my mom has already gotten me a dress, shoes, bracelet, necklace, earrings, hair clips, minitophat and gloves...the worst part is I am excited for it. NOT for the whole party/gossip/what ever the fuck that's going to happen, but the dressing up and makeup and stuff. The theme is 'Las Vegas' and I get to dress up as a show girl complete with fan made of cards.

Win.

Yea, that's why I actually want to go sometimes, nice prom dress and all that stuff.

My friends wants to go to prom in her banana costume. Laugh
I don't really have to worry about from for a years or so, though. Freshmen aren't allowed at prom, even if their dates a junior or senior. Which is pretty fucked up. What if I, for whatever reason, loved a junior, or senior? So, he wouldn't have a date because I'm not old enough? Bullshit.

Oh, and on spirit week, there's this big performance/prep rally thing. The freshmen on one side, and everyone else on the other. The whole time they have their backs turned to the Freshmen. I mean, yeah, it's a sort of tradition "lololololol, let's ignore da freshminz." But honestly? I don't really think it's fair, and when I'm a Sophmore, I still wont think it's fair. It's bullshit.

The freshmen too suffer discrimination at my school, though not to a great extent. It's mostly the sophomores who pick on the freshmen; the juniors and seniors don't seem to care.

Last year when I was a freshman, I was in gym class when I overheard an argument between a sophomore on one team and a freshman on the other who were playing volleyball. It ended with the sophomore asking the freshman, "you're a freshman, right?" And when the freshman replied, "yes," she said, "then you should know your place."

Re: Prom and other school functions

Noo If I had a dime for every time I heard "stupid freshmen" I'd be able to buy my own house by now. We were arguing with them once. We reminded them that last year, they were freshmen too, in fact, I guarantee I'm older than half of those Sophomores, so they don't even have the age non-argument that they seem to cling to so fiercely.

What's really depressing is hearing how the freshmen can't wait to be sophomores, so they can continue the cycle. We also argued that we could break that cycle, and that it doesn't have to continue. They were like "that's just how it is lol".

And what's worse, the administration encourages this shit.

Re: Prom and other school functions

Ours isn't so bad, we have some freedom, a few people are walking to prom, kinda not making any effort because our school is shit and makes also makes no effort for us - therefore it is kind of a thing to get their thoughts heard.

A few are getting the bus there, hiring old granny carts and going in a tandom ect ect.

Plus every few years a teacher gets beat up who everyone hates!

Re: Prom and other school functions

Meh, prom is shit in my school. All I heard about from people who went to prom last year is like "Oh hurr I smoked pot in the back of the limousine and only the cool people did it." and "I was so close to getting my date to suck me off!" Half the people who go only go because they think they can get their girlfriends to fuck them, seriously. If I had a date, I'd rather take her away from everyone else, and actually have a nice dinner with her alone or with a few other friends and their dates. I don't want to have to endure the massive amounts of douchebags dancing to whatever shit "music" they listen to while they practically dry-hump their dates.
