RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Them: No, because most of us (older people) know how much of an idiot we were at 17. You are not as informed as you think, kiddo.

Me: How are you going to generalize an entire age group of people as being uninformed just because you and some others were?

Them: We ALL were!

Me: How do you know that?

Them: Because every person I know in their 30's and 40's has said 'I was such an idiot when I was a teenager'.

Me: How many people of that age do you know? The majority of them on this earth?

Them: Oh lord. Just trust me on this one, I have been 17, you have never been 40. Ask your parents.

Me: Why should I trust someone who thinks they are mentally superior because they are older? Also, you being 40 doesn't mean I should trust only your experience, when there are a variety of perspectives.

Them: Because older people are(in the vast majority of cases) are mentally superior. Life's experience teaches you 10x more than school.

Me:I don't even believe school gives the best knowledge. Also, not experiencing the same things you have doesn't mean I lack critical thinking skills needed to form valid opinions.

Them: It means you are not mature enough to make informed decisions.

Me: How can you speak so sure about someone without even knowing them personally?

Also Me: Age does not determine maturity.

Them: Yes it does. And you won't realize how much it does until you are an adult.

Me: Why do you think age determines maturity?

Them: Because I'm old enough to know it's true.
-----------------
2nd debate from the same comment:
Them: Oh lord. Just trust me on this one, I have been 17, you have never been 40. Ask your parents.

Me: But not all 17 year olds have the same minds and we and other younger ages cannot be simply generalized and underestimated.

Them: When your argument is 'well you don't know for sure because you haven't asked the majority of people on earth," you show your age. You will realize you are not as smart as you think.
--
(Branching off:
Me: You were using the opinions of some people you know to discredit a whole group of people. You can't speak for ALL youth without knowing at least most of them.
Them: I can speak for most adults when i say we all thought we were idiots when we were teenagers.)

--

Me: I don't see how saying you shouldn't generalize an entire age group is a bad argument.

Them: "That is because you are too young to understand. You won't learn until you're older."

Me: I could know less about something, but I am not incapable of understanding things

Them: Yes, you are. You're not mature enough.

Me: Have you ever read "The Myth of the Teen Brain" by Dr. Robert Epstein?

Them: Nope, but I have 40 years of life experience.

Me: Dr. Robert Epstein has 64 years of experience and believes the opposite of your ideas.

Them: He is one man. I can give you the names of 200 adults that agree with me.

Me: I'm pretty sure more than 200 people would disagree with you. Having many people agreeing with you doesn't automatically make you right anyway.

Them: Writing a book doesn’t make you write either.

Me: True, though you never even read what he had to say.

Them: I bet there are over 1,000 books on the subject. Why is his right? Not because you agree with him, it’s because he agrees with the way you think because of your life’s experience.

Me: I agree with him because he made good points.

Them: And if he made points you didn't agree with you'd say they were bad and he is "ignorant". Have you read a book that makes opposite points?

Me: Wouldn't you say the same thing about a book you disagree with? Also, Dr. Robert Epstein uses studies/ refutes other studies and nothing else I've read so far makes as much logical sense as him.
I also haven't found anything to disprove him yet.

Them: There are books that refute his finding. You will believe what you want and you will ignore or crap on anything that says differently. You are young. We all did that.

I'm less stupid than I was when I was younger but that doesn't mean I'm better than any given younger person. Why do people think life has a seniority system? It would seem to follow that you somehow get better just by getting older, without any other work...

Rereading those comments is making me nauseous.
Quote:Because older people are(in the vast majority of cases) are mentally superior.

Yes, you are. You're not mature enough.

You are not as informed as you think, kiddo.
That condescending "kiddo" thrown at the end. All that guy developed from age was a major superiority complex.
If I read this shit when I was younger, I would've been way more fucking depressed than I already was.

My issue with this argument is that they always seem to leave out other factors, like environment, location, culture, etc from their stupid "I'm older, I know more than you" arguments.
