RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Its a crappy modified version of Linux. You are only allowed to download programs from the Asus website, and you are stuck with the outdated Firefox 2.0.

WTF? I'd suggest a better distro. Even ReactOS from 1999 was better (and ReactOS is nowhere near done.) I'm sure you can boot the installer from the BIOS. Maybe get an old version of Ubuntu or Debian?

Firstoff, methinks you were exxagerating when you said that ReactOS from 1999 would be better. Anyways, what he appears to be using is the custom variant of Xandros that ASUS decided to flash with early model eee PCs. Early models tended to have very little storage space and on-board memory (4GB and 512MB for the first model if I remember correctly). Anyways, I'd suggest flashing with a lightweight variant of Linux or stripped-down Windows XP.

I was. I wish the ReactOS project was going better, before I heard about how early it was in the development cycle after being in development since 1996, I was considering making the switch to ReactOS.

That's what I was thinking. I've seen variants on Ubuntu that are quite lightweight, but I'm not sure if that's light enough. For a 2nd option, I'd suggest WinFLP, but this person might be a Windows hater.

Actually, WinFLP lost support a month ago. If you absolutely must use a Windows XP derivative, use Windows Embedded POSReady 2009, which will be supported until the end of Windows 7's support cycle (2020, if I remember correctly).

If you trust Open-Source, trust Homebrew Updates. There are homebrewers making updates for Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT4, Windows XP, MS-DOS, and more. Not sure about FLP, though.

I agree that businesses, ATM operators, etc. should upgrade. But if you aren't them and you don't need IE9/10 (even then, get chrome) or DirectX 11, homebrew updates work fine. I'd be on XP right now if I had my own computer (in my opinion, XP works fucking better.) Whether upgrades or homebrew updates are right for you depends on will to learn a new interface and security needs.

Also, Windows 98 (and 95 as well as ME, 1.0, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, and 3.1) ARE MS-DOS derivatives.

I prefer Windows 7. First Aero, while flashy, is nice at times. Secondly the show desktop thing is VERY handy, thirdly Aero Snap is fantastic, especially when you code and need to look at a resource, but don't have Dexpot installed(or anything else to give you virtual desktops), or have multiple monitors.

I just swap windows (I'm a really procrastinate-y N00B Unity-Javascript programmer.) I use 7, but the only feature I use is the taskbar (when I had XP, I wasn't aware of the Quick Launch Toolbar,) and the Start menu and Windows Explorer are more convenient in XP.

Doesn't mean you should still use them in an active capacity for anything critical. (perhaps except MS-DOS derivatives, but that's another thing entirely)

By MS-DOS derivatives, I was referring to stuff like DR-DOS, FreeDOS, RxDOS, PTS-DOS, DIP-DOS, ROM-DOS, etc...

Secondly the show desktop thing is VERY handy, thirdly Aero Snap is fantastic, especially when you code and need to look at a resource, but don't have Dexpot installed(or anything else to give you virtual desktops), or have multiple monitors.

I just swap windows (I'm a really procrastinate-y N00B Unity-Javascript programmer.)
I do that, however if I'm trying to figure out how to do something I'd rather be able to see both, although I prefer two monitors.

I was aware of it, however I couldn't get it to work, besides I do prefer being able to move windows around and stuff. Also try and use the other features and you will love them

Sorry, but not to me. I love the breadcrumbs feature of Explorer as it allows me to navigate quickly(more so than XP), and I can search things from the Start Menu, not to mention the fact that you don't have to wait for another menu to open to shut down the computer properly, or have a menu thing pop up, and if you have a lot of programs, take up most of the screen.

I agree that the search is convenient, but I like XP's because it takes less clicks to do everything. Breadcrumbs, to each it's own, and I like the shutdown menus because I press shutdown by accident often on 7 and that didn't happen so often on XP.

Pretty sure you can change that feature to whatever on Win7.

Don't judge me!

Judged.

Back to using eOS because Windows is distracting as fuck (vidya gayms) and I can focus on working better there. Plus Blender has better performance there, so w/e. And so much sexy. Typical environment when not working on shits instead of desktop because that's just more exciting. :3
