RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Need some help

Alright so last night I accidentally got my laptop's screen wet and I can't really see anything. I can still see, but it's too dark so I think the backlight went out. So can someone help me fix this? I'm pretty sure I'm fucked though

I'm pretty sure you can get replacement monitors for laptops but I only use a desktop so I wouldn't know.

I know I can, but it's more worthwhile to get a new one instead if I'm doing that. I just need something that's not too costly

You'll probably need to remove the cover thing over the monitor, buy new backlights, replace broken ones.

Of course you'll want to be careful not to damage anything while removing the monitor cover(or screen or whatever you remove)

Google for your laptop model & repair screen and see how other people have done it (if they have).

RE: Need some help

You can buy an external monitor, or a new laptop.

These options are both likely cheaper than replacing/repairing the screen.

What kind of laptop is it (specs...)?

It's an HP from 2005. CPU is an intel pentiunium M Clocked at 1.60 Ghz, with 512 MB of RAM. I tried an external monitor last night. :/

RE: Need some help

HP computers from the mid-2000s have a tendency to rapidly fail. My computer was a desktop, but it started failing to boot in 2011 or 2012. Anyways, I'd go buy another laptop. A ThinkPad, maybe.

Ah, yeah, for something that old you're probably better off upgrading.

RE: Need some help

Computer skills, especially coding, are one way to earn money.

I got a laptop recently for $230, new. There are definitely options for used laptops that cost less than that, which would be an improvement from the one you have.

I've been thinking of arranging a sort of "class" that focuses on web programming... lots of people on SS are in need of short-term money, or longer-term income, and so many people want web sites or related computer work, all over the place.

Neighbors, area businesses, family, working remotely... there are so many options.

Night has been using Amazon Mechanical Turk and making some money there, too.

You could also see if you can find someone with an older laptop they don't need. I think a lot of laptops newer than your current one get thrown in the trash or sit on people's shelves when they get newer computers. Maybe try a classified ad in your area?

There are other possibilities, too... but do any of those things sound like options?

We had one laptop with a broken backlight. It only cost a few bucks to fix because all we need to buy was the light. My father did all work himself.

Well good news, backlight is working somewhat, there is still water or there was some damage as it started flickering. I'm taking the covering off and cleaning up the inside.

Simple, we don't eat rice often, and only get a little when we need it.

Huh.

We usually buy 10Ib of it. Sometimes we even buy two different types. Standard white rice in 10Ib bag, then 5Ib of Basmati. And we also have Bulgur rice.

I hate HP. The monitor has like 20 screws in it, some in places I can't get to, so I can't actually remove the monitor without breaking the casing.

There are probably some plastic clips on the sides that you need to gently pry open with a card or other strong thin plastic object.

Well, the thing is, is to remove the first plastic layer is rather hard the way they have it put in, next there are like 5 screws on each side, which are impossible to remove due to having very little space. However right now I'm outputting to an external monitor.

Hey, just wondering do you use your laptop mainly for internet browsing? I know its not in your budget, but keep this in the back of your mind if you do need a new laptop sometime. Have you heard of chromebooks? Their cheap computers that work pretty well, but the only downfall is that they can only do web browsing, not much more. But for the price their pretty nice.
