RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Censorship

I have another speech to do for English. I have to argue weather or not censorship is a viable option in any situation. Of course that answer is no, but I'm not quite sure what spin I'll put on it, or what arguments.

It's going to be a passionate little thing. I can tell you that.

Huh... I feel like you're talking about 1984, but you left out "war is peace" and replaced it with power and victory.

Anyway, one thing is that I have to record it on an audio file as well as make a powerpoint. So, a can actually "perform" it for you guys!

Its 1984 + Sith creed.

As you can see, the appearance that censorship and/or ignorance is good in fact leads to slavery to something. Perhaps not a "scholarly" deduction...but I think it soinds about right.

When you censor something, you relive the discomfort of the crowd, but rob the speaker of his right to free speech.

I think I will argure against the justifications for censorship. Mainly "Certain material causes disruption, and we don't want that." "These beliefs/words/content is filth and has no place in society." and "Think of the children!!!1!!!!!11!"

your answer should be yes censorship is a viable option in certain situations.

because there was a situation where there was the option of employing censorship and you found it viable.

it's easy for moral absolutism to lead to hypocrisy

Quote:Potato There is a fine line between free speech, and things like Slander, Libel, and Vandalism.

how is that line "fine"? if some cartoonist draws a picture of the prophet muhammad, should it be protected as free speech, or should it be deemed a crime punishable by death? different people draw their own lines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jyllands-Po...ontroversy

and this isn't what i was talking about. i'm saying that just because you don't like to be censored, doesn't mean censorship is always wrong.

The answer is simple, if it was done in parody and satire, then it is free speech, if it was done maliciously then it isn't.

you call that a fine line? what a joke. if comedian does a parody that offends someone whom it parodied and you believe it was done with malicious intent, which way does that go...i think i can turn it which ever way i want. so much ambiguity

If the person did it to harm someone, (whether it's their Image, their beliefs, credibility, or their person), then it is malicious. If the person did it without trying to cause harm to someone, then it's not. It's not as hard as you think it is.

Quote:Why don't we just let bots roam our forums because: "mah 3 sp33ch!!11!"?

i agree, the right answer to "whether or not censorship is a viable option in any situation" is yes

Quote:If the person did it to harm someone, (whether it's their Image, their beliefs, credibility, or their person), then it is malicious. If the person did it without trying to cause harm to someone, then it's not. It's not as hard as you think it is.

the issue is more complicated than you think. people say things to harm other people all the time for the benefit of society, in political debates, in court cases etc. a society where it's a crime to say anything with the intention to harm somebody's credibility/beliefs would be the most totalitarian we've ever seen, and it would certainly fall apart pretty quickly.

let me ask you, should this statement: "the president has a small dick" be protected as free speech? what if i told you i said it with malicious intent?

What's funny is that whatever it is Potato's saying is being censored by my ignore list, and given the responses people have given him I don't think I want to see what he's written.

Yay censorship?

Well, it isn't going to be about posting on forums. It's gonna be about censorship by the government, or by certain organizations. Censorship of music, TV, art, movies, etc.

When signing up on these forums, you agree to follow rules in order to gain the PRIVILEGE of posting here. These rules include not posting private info and not posting pornographic images. Both of which Duelix did, so his privilege was revoked.

You have freedom of speech. But, you do not own this site. Someone else does, and she is letting you speak on it. Because of that, she can set up whatever rules she wants, and if you break them, she won't let you speak anymore.

It's actually quite simple.

you're beating the strawman if that was a response to me. i'm not denying soulriser's right to censor her forums, but not allowing certain types of material to be posted is a form of censorship. if the government banned porn, that's censorship. if a part of the internet banned porn, it is a more acceptable form of censorship, but it still is censorship.

My presentation isn't going to be about forum postings. It is going to be about censorship at a larger scale. You are right. Censorship is okay when it's protecting an individual from having their information revealed or exposing them to explicit or grotesque images that they did not consent to see.

I may address that problem, but my presentation is going to be against it, as it addresses it at a higher lever.

Also, don't you EVER call me a hypocrite. You don't just toss around those accusations like that.

"I have to argue weather or not censorship is a viable option in any situation" this prompt is very clear, you can either argue for an absolutist view or against it. if you think that censorship is a viable option when done at a small scale, then your are AGAINST the absolutist view that censorship is not "a viable option in any situation."

Gah. Just looked back at the requirements. I'll actually get docked if I say that censorship is not okay in most forms, but it's sometimes okay. Because it's a "weaker argument."

This is all a case of my teacher making a bullshit assignment that I will happliy get docked for. As per usual.

Maybe I'll do my speech on limiting discussion. And bring up and refute this assignment...

So, here it is. Not happy with it. At all. Not what I wanted to cover. And I have a "weak argument" and it's too long. So, that's not good.

I like the fifth slide a bit, and the sixth slide a bit more. The rest can be thrown out and be put back on the drawing board.
