RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

My school's going down the toilet fast....

I'm not sure if I can exactly confirm this, but I overheard my geometry teacher talking about the school planning on implementing a policy of failing any student that missed 5 or more days (or it might have been more than 5 days, not sure) in a said quarter next academic year.

My reaction to this: oh, my, god. No. Just, no. Well, I'm not the type of person that's going to attend school every day. I believe that it is justified for me to take a day off occasionally from school, because students have to put up with a lot of shit at school. Usually, the limit is much larger, but c'mon, 5? Thankfully, that will also be my last year ever in school. Ever.

5? Five? FIVE? At my old school it was 10, and that was pretty loosely enforced. Five is just ridiculous.

I can't believe that. I'm always annoyed by my school's attendance policy but they don't make a huge deal of following up on absences so long as they're spread out. Puts it in perspective...

Hope everything works out.

My school's going down the toilet fast....

When I was absent for 2 months, it pretty much overloaded my school's policy on attendance.

So it ended getting buried and forgotten because no one knew what the hell to do about it. I'm so amazing that I cause unique and unforeseen events to occur and overload mental circuits...

That line is a keeper. I'd consider quoting that on the cover of your book.

Or maybe in some sort of trailer for it.

RE: My school's going down the toilet fast....

Its pretty funny because it is so true...

Looking back on my life I can recall so many incidents where I baffled people simply because my circumstance was extraordinary. Its like somehow walking right into the Oval Office then people trying to figure out how I possibly landed the odds of just waltzing straight into the Presidents office wihout wver being stopped.

I think Ive got a luck modifier on my dice rolls.

I can emphasize too. I'm having that problem with tardys. Each 3 tardys or one absence I lose 10% of my maximum grade! I think I might have flunked from that! I really wish I knew which teachers do this beforehand!

My school's going down the toilet fast....

I've pretty much cracked the egg on this one: schools make money off attendance. My school district is actually quite broke.

Basically, they're sacrificing human rights for more money. Like that hasn't happened before.

That would be interesting to do an expose on. Money based on "seat time" is based on the notion that "seat time" equates with some kind of learning. But, what if it doesn't?

What if you're learning more outside of school, than inside it?

The whole point of high school these days, it seems, is so people can get into college. Why not just fold college into high school, or middle school? Why wait for whatever you learn in college... especially when a lot of its content is now available to anyone?

(Huge wall of text about all that omitted.)

Where's all the school district's money going, anyway?
