RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Video Why must they judge us?

I am being judged by gender. And I think we can all agree that this has happened to us at least once. Boys, specifically, are continuously being treated like s***. I can't see one boy who is honored at all. And don't get me wrong, girls deserve just as many rights as boys, but they have all the rights- and in some cases, even when the girls don't live up to the expectations of the teachers, they are also treated badly. So basically, if you are a girl, you have to automatically be smart, obey all the rules, focus ALL of the time, and all of that other bulls*** if you want to be "successful" If you are a boy, you just shut up, don't say anything, don't make remarks, have no fun, and then there might be a chance you get through? Is this really the f***** up way they judge you? Not by character, but rather by how well you listen to their God Damn rules and restrictions? Is this what it comes to? Ugh. I feel like this has been brought up before, but it could just be another problem. Another reason not to give a sh*t about school, I am guessing. I really want to hear your guys' opinions about this. In fact, why don't you use that poll up there? Sorry if it doesn't appear, I use a Kindle with crappy internet service, so sometimes it won't even click on something. Anyways, I found a way to sneak in this website, so my parents current hate of these forums might not interrupt me for a while. Hopefully.

Why must they judge us?

It goes on in my school. Boys are expected to be athletic, wear HASHTAG SWAG YOLO shirts, and watch Duck Dynasty. I'm none of the above, so the only time anyone outside of my circle of friends ever talks to me is because they think stuttering is funny. The girls are expected to LOVE "the" PewDiePie, and "the" Tobuscus, and send texts that are nothing but smileys. I could put LOVE My Little Pony, but that's mostly the out crowd (duh, that's something I like, so it must be "out.") All I can say about that is all I see in PewDiePie is yelling and rape jokes, and all I see in Tobuscus is what Game Grumps, Skydoesminecraft, and many others did better, as well as some rants that EVERY ranter trying to appeal to the masses did already, and texts filled with smileys is wasting your parents' money.

If you don't fit into all of those for your gender, you are considered an outcast by both genedrs, and hang out with the "lame-os."

RE: Why must they judge us?

This pretty much all happens in my school. Everyone thinks I'm kind, innocent, and gets good grades solely because I'm a girl who rarely talks in school. In reality though, my attitude changes depending on who I'm talking to, I have a gutter mind, and my grades are shit. Ya...

Why must they judge us?

My school was sexist in the sense that they were real strict in the mingling of male/female.

The effects of such continued restrictions have begun to wear off, as before they had hindered my ability to socialize(speaking of socializing, I found that I'm now so much better at it, and now actively engage more often, thanks to watching The Office. Odd indeed.)

General school consensus among admins and teachers was boys were rowdy and guilty of anything wrong, and the females were genius and never did evil.

I was an exception among this categorization.

My school is one of those Anti PDA schools. My school has a unique roll for females actually. Guys are expected to the stereotype jocks, of course. But the girls are expected to be sluts, which is a bit unusual when it comes to stereotypes.

RE: Why must they judge us?

Sexism is an issue at my school. I am rather oblivious to what goes on in the social sphere of that place, so I don't know how heavy its prevalence is. It wouldn't surprise me if I saw great prevalence of it in the future, though. I don't know of the preconceived roles that the school actually holds for each gender.

I do notice a lot of people saying the word n*gger between every other word in a single sentence, but that is another issue...

I often forget about the existence of the thanks button on these forums...

I'm not sure what to say of sexism. Sexism is a problem pretty much everywhere you go.

I guess it's limited to what people do and what they expect of themselves. I know that there are definitely a lot of social norms which I don't bother to follow.

The important thing is the level of sexism.

If that's the case, I really don't know. You don't hear some asshole hurling sexist jokes every day or saying women are inferior or whatnot. I live in the Bay Area, which is obviously quite liberal, so it's at least less sexist that other places I'd expect.

Some sexism can be subtle too, like perhaps in some jokes which if analyzed turn out to be pretty sexist.

And thanks to media influences, they'll become subconscious sexists without ever really being aware of how sexist they're being.

Why must they judge us?

Fun fact: My science work today had sexism in it. I couldn't help but answer the questions with anti-sexism remarks. Biggrin I'm sure there's a lot of other sexism in school work... but it really stood out in that period (I was sort of in a grump).

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

With very few exceptions, the girls in my grade are expected to act like sluts and the guys like either jocks or nerds. The social hierarchy in my school is horrific, but at least there's no obvious popular group.

For those who don't immediately understand it as that Bay Area.

Not that I didn't get it, seeing that all the TV and Film I watched, it'd be difficult not to encounter frequent usage of the word Bay Area for the San Francisco Bay Area(

Why must they judge us?

This was in my elementary school, it was terrible. Sometimes my family or "family friends" would ask "What sport do you play?". It's a loaded question, obviously. I didn't play any sports because i hate meaningless competition. And at school we were given volleyballs, basketballs, dodgeballs, etc for recess to play with. They were kept artifically scarce to around 7 balls for 30 kids so fuck you if you are an introvert. Also, guys were expected to play dodgeball and basketball after a while, and using the playground became "uncool" once i got to around 4th grade. It sucked, because my friends liked basketball which i sucked at, so i got upset at losing because i don't like basketball.

Then in middle school, PE might as well have been named "WAR ON HORMONES", because that's what it was. It was like some Nazi bootcamp where we could not change back into our normal clothes until we got in a perfectly straight line. Everyone was expected to dress out in the PE uniform every day(it costed 10 or 20 dollars by the way). Not dressing out in the uniform resulted in automatically losing a letter grade, and it was VERY difficult to regain points. If you didn't get within 30 seconds of your first mile time you couldn't get the highest grade. This resulted in many kids becoming extremely upset, because we were not told on the first mile that this mile would determine the grades on our next miles.(After the first mile, your grade for each mile after it was based on how close you could get to that mile time)
We also had to report to a "role call" at the start of PE after we dressed out in the PE uniform. We all had specific spots we had to stand in every time when the teacher got there, otherwise we would be late and lose points. I hated it, and luckily PE wasn't as ridiculous in high school. I'd rather have an extra hour of recess though.
Sexism wasn't nearly as bad in high school thankfully, although that might just be because i became a lot more introverted in high school and only talked to people that weren't assholes and were pretty nice people.
