RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hah, just a few sentences in I was thinking "this is a sticky post." There's a reason...

Basically it's a textbook intake text based on an excellent part of Trekkie's longer post, spun into pirate lingo. Since people get pirate-themed welcome replies anyway, why not give them this to set the tone?

Onboarding or intake is a critical part of any game or community... lots of ways to do it, but for anyone who finds this, welcome aboard. Smile

What's the basic outline?. It's quite likely I will produce a wall of text so tall it'll achieve what the Tower of Bable could not If I went on to introduce myself.
(Unless xcriteria/Soulriser will be the one's to "produce" this outline, as examples, to lead the way. Then I shall simply wait......)

What, you think my example won't be a wall of text? Smile

I can feel a lecture coming on now, a meta-analysis about how to write about identity.

That's making even my head spin.

Here are some quick thoughts instead:

When it comes to explaining yourself in text form, it helps to define yourself in terms of things other people can relate to. If they can't relate, then it helps to explain so they can. "Welcome to my world..." so to speak.

Think about how characters get introduced in a film or story. Who is a given character? When writers do this well, you can come to really understand who someone is, what they want, and all that, in a relatively short period of time.

So maybe looking to tropes is a good way to start! Here's a list (of lists) to pick from: TV Tropes: Characters

Another side of things is explaining backstory, who you used to be, who you want to be, and all that.

As for me... I guess the approach that comes to mind is to write up an autobiography. It's harder to make a quick "I'm this" "i'm not this" summary, beyond just copying yours. Smile

Digital native! I've used that before. Great term. That I am. And I'm a cognitive anthropologist. (Still figuring out how to build the credential for that.)

Which reminds me, here's the intro I did on the TV Tropes ARG, The Wall Will Fall:

http://forum.watchthefootage.com/viewtop...175#p30873

There's your intro. I drove them crazy with my walls of text and my attempts to make sense of the game. It got really meta.

Maybe combine the introduction question with the learning lab idea.

It can be daunting to explain who you are and who you aren't if you're still trying to figure those things out. Smile

One way to do both is to ask people to think about their life story, past, present, and future. And the story of School Survival. What can we as a community do for people? Answering that question could help bring new people.

That said... are you thinking of bring new people to this thread, or to the forums in general?

There's a way to change themes in the forums?

I can't count how many people won't come here because of the white-on-black. :(

There's always the "Printable Version" below, but the formatting is extremely bare.

Introduction thread

Where is this theme changer of which you speak?

Hello, traveler.

This is an ancient account I have not used in a long time. My views have changed much in the intervening months and years.

Nonetheless, I refuse to clean it up. Pretending that I've held my current views since the beginning of time is what we in the industry call a lie. Asking people to do so contributes to moralistic self-loathing. "See, those people have nothing damning! I do! I'm truly vile!"

Because you can never be a good person with a single blemish on the moral record, I thought that simply entertaining some thoughts made me irredeemable. Though I don't care for his writing style, William Faulkner presents a good counterexample. He went from being a typical Southern racist to supporting the civil rights movement. These days we'd yell at him for that, probably.

People are allowed to change their views.

Nevertheless, this period of my life has informed some of how I am today. In good ways and bad ways. To purge it would be to do a disservice to history. Perhaps it will not make anyone sympathetic, but it may help someone understand.

If, after reading all this, you still decide to use the post above as evidence that I am evil today, ask yourself if you have never disagreed with the moral code you now follow. In all likelihood you did, at some point. If some questions are verboten, and the answer is "how dare you ask that," don't expect your ideological opponents to ever change their minds.

Oh, wow... sure enough. "Board style" under "Other options" on http://forums.school-survival.net/usercp...on=options

This is important information... I think a lot more people would use the site if they knew about this option.

The white theme I selected is burning my eyes, but that's only because Day Hurts Dark Adjusted Eyes at first. I'm used to the white in G+, but it feels strange here.

"I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don't teach you how to walk away from someone you don't love any longer. They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing."-Neil Gaimen

Hello Biggrin Just joined, I'm new here. My name is Serena, my favorite color is lime green. I also really like cookies. Yep. That pretty much sums me up. This forum seems incredibly interesting, I look forward to hating school with you folks. SEE YA. Razz
