RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Pep Rallies/Spirit Assemblies

What's the point?
At my school we have an abundance of sports teams, so every month, basically, we have a spirit assembly to get everyone cheering for teams that haven't even won a game in years.
If school is so damn important, then why are they wasting our precious "learning time" huddling all of the students in a cramped gymnasium so we can shout and holler at a prancing wolf trying to throw a basketball into a hoop? I never understand the point of getting student "pepped up" for something they don't even care about in the first place, there is no reason to make attendance mandatory to something that only induces headaches and brain aneurysms!
So if anyone can tell me what the reason is for all of that nonsense, I won't leave school with a stomachache right before a rally so I can rant about it online.

RE: Pep Rallies/Spirit Assemblies

...every time i read a post about something one of you guys hates about school, the more i realize mine is a pretty good skool.

We have pep sessions once every semester(or 9 weeks, i'm not sure anymore but we just had one a few weeks ago)and if you don't want to go to the gym and sit on the floor or painful bleachers you can go to the lunch room and pretend you're in a study hall until the last 5 minutes when we're allowed to talk, oooooh 5 miunutes out of 30 to talk...that's only how it is with bitches for supervisor...because even though there are like 6 teachers in there, only 1 gets to have power and it's usually the worst one

Just had one today. Everyone cheered as though they were about to escape from a mental hospital when the win-less football team came out.

I kind of liked pep rallies because I didn't have to go to class and i could see my friends. And its only really for the football team because.. we're very proud of our football team here for some reason. I don't care

i couldn't talk to my friends bc it was too loud, and ours was for all our teams, even the ones i didn't know we had...like a dance team

The point is to get kids energized so the teachers can shove more shit into their heads at a faster pace.

when do you have your rallies? Ours are always at the end of the day, and we go to our homeroom...rooms for a few minutes before they start dismissing us to go down

RE: Pep Rallies/Spirit Assemblies

Pep rallies are retarded. None of out teams have won for years, but somehow when they come out, all the dumbasses cheer their heads off!! The sad thing is, everybody on the teams always brag about being on them, even though they havent won for years!

My school used to do pep rallies for students who got good grades.

Pep Rallies/Spirit Assemblies

My school had SPA(students of the performing arts) instead of a pep rally. They were either the first or last Friday of the month, and in it we heard announcements and students of the month for each of the arts. Then, we'd either have a guest speaker, college performance, a glimpse of some performance from our school, or we'd play/ watch some drama games.
I don't know if it was a rule that we had to go, but some of the teachers let students chill in the classrooms and do whatever, or we could just go in the library (I think).
