RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Bible Study Classes in Texas Public Schools?

Christ Weary of Texas Public School Bible Classes:
So, let's see if the Rude Pundit has this straight: in public schools in Texas, classes about the Bible that are supposed to remain secular actually deviate from the historical and social significance of the Good Book and get into preaching? You might say, "Get the fuck out of here" in shocked, oh, so very shocked response, thinking that surely the open-minded people of the Toothless Creek school district would do such a thing. And you'd be wrong. See, according to a just-released study by the Texas Freedom Network, a progressive religious group, "With a few notable exceptions, the public school courses currently taught in Texas often fail to meet minimal academic standards for teacher qualifications; curriculum, and academic rigor; promote one faith perspective over all others; and push an ideological agenda that is hostile to religious freedom, science and public education." Yep, in Texas untrained teachers use tax dollars to "teach" Christian belief and nutzoid fundamentalist bullshit.

We have a prayer club at my school...We did...or do we still have it?

It's like what I put in my other post, the government of Ontario is funding religious education. There is a school called "Our Lady of Fatima" just down the road.

I swore to myself that if my school ever did something like that I'd refuse to participate. Or I'd go to argue Smile

This has been a test of the emergency pointless argument system. Had this been a real pointless argument, someone would have been called a facist.

we have such a variety of religions at our school, christian, native religions, muslim, jewish, we dont have prayer services. Im sure there is permission for the other kids who are muslim that stay home for their religion, as well as the jewish and natives. We have nohmongs here, i was so used to them in lacrosse. We have some mongolians though. Scratchchin

preaching is bad. also, i think that restricting yourself to only studying the historical stuff in a dry, intellectual manner is bad too. there is some good stuff in the Bible, as BigWolf pointed out. in fact I agree with everything BigWolf said Biggrin but yeah, bible classes in school are just looking for trouble, especially if it's not easy to opt out.

Back to....

BigWolf Wrote:Though throughout the years, I'm very sure this book has been tampered with by man, which makes certain sections unreliable, this is the main reason I hate following any religion blindly.

... this is a .pdf file someone recommended to me, a whole bunch of research done on where the bible originated from, and who might or might not have tampered with sections along the way:
http://www.geocities.com/deism101us/Canon.PDF

very interesting stuff. (hope the file's still there) Smile

I just read the article, and wow, whoever made that test needs to get logic beaten into them. Unless I'm mistaken, most of them beg the question and make assumptions.

1) The bible is true because it's honest. The bible is honest because it's true. Assumes bible is honest.
2) The bible is true because the miracles it describes very fantastic. The miracles happened because it's in the bible.
3) Assumes bible has unity.
4) When did Jesus ever endorse the bible? He was dead when it was created. Cuckoo
5) What about the survival of "heretical" gospels?

Quote:then thats illegal because of the sep of religion and state
Unfortunately there is no law like that. It is just a political stance.

About the bible, "A book is a mirror: if an ass peers into it, you can't expect an apostle to look out."

BigWolf Wrote:My take on the Bible (while I'm at it)...The Bible is a great book, full of love, understanding, and most of all righteous people. Though throughout the years, I'm very sure this book has been tampered with by man, which makes certain sections unreliable, this is the main reason I hate following any religion blindly. All religions have their flaws. The Bible may say "love thy neighbor," but it also says you can sell your child into slavery! I forgot the passage, I think it's somewhere in Leviticus, I'll find it and post it soon. So I say, don't take all the Bible's teachings literally, and don't take some of the Bible's teachings at all! I think you'd know the good from the bad, your parents taught you that. (Hopefully.)

Peace,

Wolf

Oh oh. My favorite verse is the one that says women shouldn't be allowed to teach because we have wicked ideas and lead people astray. I think that was Peter, but I'm not sure.

Well...I have my beef with some parts of the Bible. I think it has a lot of good messages to it: love, compassion, and especially understanding. And I think it has good christian values in the core of it...but then when people start picking out all the details it gets sorta screwy. I don't quite think it's been tampered with over time that bothers me as much as the fact that people did write it. People with a biased perspective, of their race, gender, and culture. It's a little bit easier to take the Bible literally in context but some of the detail stuff is...well, scary. But I think the details are aimed at the culture while the main message still applies today.

Leviticus would not be my favorite book either. In fact Deuteronomy and Leviticus probably rank in the bottom ten on my list. So many culture laws. Sacrifices, rituals... People were pretty barbaric back then. Anyways...

Scary thing to think the government sponsors that. I liked a comparative religions class but just a bible class? Eek. I remember they let the christian bible study come into school early or late and meet and I didn't have a problem with that until I found out that support groups for diversity and homosexuality couldn't meet outside of school hours. Then there might have been some fits thrown.

Let's do the time warp again!

It was indeed Peter. Peter is often the one whose words underlie the weirdo fundamentalist message. He basically thought sex was so dirty that men would be better off as castrati. Bet he was a BIG perv behind all that frontin'...

I, for one, think that there should be 2 types of christians. The pig-headed, bigots, that support racism, sexism, and homophobia (Bush, Bush Administration, Republicans, Conservatives) and the ones you believe in the TRUE message of the bible, unity, wisdom, peace, mercy, love, ect.

It's going good. I ended up dropping two of my classes so now I'm a part time student, but I'm still enjoying it. The best part: teachers don't care if you don't do your homework (Although for College Algebra I highly recomend it) Biggrin
