RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I think community colleges in the US are most similar to what are just called colleges here. I'm actually in university though, albeit a shitty one. So I guess not?

Pythagoras' theorem is easy o_O. 3, 4, 5 has to be the most common Pythagorean triad ever.

Geometry is my favorite math subject. It is easier to understand because of the graphics and illustration. And, unlike other math subjects the formula are simple and not complex.

Yeah, likewise. Though whenever you were still around a year or two ago, I was still a newfag to SS (and the internet in general) so a lot of the posts I made back then were stupid.

I'm doin' alright, the weather's cooling down (a blessing, as I'm a cold weather person), though school just started, it's not that bad (yet), overall things are going pretty well here in The Burgh.

Carla Franklin may be a whore. She may be a wonderful, kind, moral woman. Seeing as I don't know her personally, I cannot know for sure. However, I find her actions (suing Google, requesting the personal info of her critics, getting angry over random internet idiocy that she should ignore and be bigger than, trying to get this site in trouble because of a few users' commentary on the situation, etc.) pretty ridiculous and unwarranted. If she didn't want people to to be talking about/judging her, well 1. that's impossible, she's a human, and 2. she shouldn't have been a model or agreed to be on film. AND 3. she DEFINITELY shouldn't have sued Google and made all this fuss over a few random idiots whom she probably won't ever know expressing their opinion. Mmkay? MMKAY.

Lol, word. College is pretty fun. It's a lot of hard work, but has a lot of really cool aspects to it too. I feel like high school needs to take an approach more like college. High school is kind of monotonous and not very stimulating, it tends to leave us just going through the motions to get through the day. And subsequently, that makes us lazy as fuck, because we're no longer really using our brains that much, but just getting through the dragged out monotony of school.

High school needs to teach us to be more self-sufficient. They direct too much for you, and don't let you think about things yourself, but rather make a bunch of decisions for you. When I went to college, I felt wholly insufficient, and it took me A LOT of work to adjust. I'm still having trouble with the college lifestyle in a way. A lot of responsibility is left upon you. There's no one reminding you of due dates that are months away at the time they're assigned, professors don't care about you (unlike a lot of high school teachers who you can convince to let you turn something in late), and if you don't make the cut, then that's tough shit. College is hard in that aspect.

But college is also lots of fun. Been making a lot of friends, been more social, and getting involved in a lot more things that I didn't think I'd get involved in. I'm actually hoping to get a spot DJ'ing on the radio here for about an hour, and I think I'm in good standing for it. And I've also been playing at some parties 'n stuff, bringin' that bass to the dancefloor! So the fact that there's tons of shit to do in college is cool, but it definitely ain't no cake walk.

And I'm glad to hear your sister is having a good time at college! My first semester was really rough, and my second semester didn't go all the great either. It was extremely stressful. But this semester is going better, and it makes me see why people like college so much, lol.

The Desert Fox Wrote:Yeah, likewise. Though whenever you were still around a year or two ago, I was still a newfag to SS (and the internet in general) so a lot of the posts I made back then were stupid.

Haha, don't worry about it. We all have a point in our internet lives that we look back on and think "wow, I can't believe I was like that!" Just ask Darthmat! I know I sure as hell feel like that myself, lol.

But I used to be harder on the new folk comin' around here, however looking back, I feel like I was too hard on them. There's really no need to be a total cunt to someone new, either to SS or to the internet as a whole. Everyone has that learning curve, and they'll never learn anything if everyone else is hounding them for every little flaw they have. It's really counter-productive behavior. I've tried to make myself chill out a little since I left. And I'm a lot less depressed than I used to be, so that helps me tolerate people a little more, lol. Razz

Hurray for cool weather though! I'm not used to the humidity here in New York (especially coming from living in a desert all my life), so when it gets hot, it's brutal as fuck. But it's starting to cool down quite a bit already. New York winter is approaching, you can feel it in the air. And goddamn, winter up here is intense.

NowhereWoman Wrote:What college do you go to?
It's awesome you went to college in New York. Biggrin

I'm attending SUNY Binghamton right now. I was getting letters from NYU Polytech, and RPI in my junior year of high school, which are real good schools, but $32,000-34,000 a semester isn't really in my budget. Razz So I'm at this state school. It's still a pretty good school, but very difficult. I've had to study my ass off up here, and I would do little to no studying in high school and still do great on the exams 'n stuff (which I'm sure many of you are the same way).

It's quite a change going from Texas to New York though! It took a lot of adjusting, especially with some events that occurred pretty soon after I moved to NY. Made it extra difficult. But now that I'm relatively used to the place, made a few friends, and got my bearings a little better here, it's pretty nice! Definitely a valuable experience. I would've never learned so much about life, in general, had I not moved away from home for college. It's a difficult process, but a valuable one.

you know the formula:

Well I applied it to: 2x(squared)-7x+4 = 0 and then simplified and got:

[Image: 02-1.jpg] OR [Image: 03-1.jpg]

but how does it work with a negative in the square route? my calculator keeps saying MATH ERROR!

That's because there's no actual solution in real numbers (numbers you're familiar with).

Can you think of any number when multiplied with itself that becomes negative?

No. Thus you have to create the abstract quantity "i" that's the square root of -1. Few calculators deal with this.

Get your math homework solved here.

Parallel? Oh, boy.

Well, we need to, for the first one, of part A, replace X and Y respectively. Therefore --

8 = 2(0) + b

B = 8.

y = 2x + 8.

Simple as that.
