RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

History

Does anybody other than me thinking History is an absolutely useless subject? I mean, c'mon. Who really gives a flying fuck about what happened in the past. Sure, it can be great to know who and what made your country, but honestly, unless I get some occupation at a war museum or something, I doubt I'll be using any of the stuff I learned in history class in my daily life.

That being said, I don't even remember anything I learned from history class last year. Once it's taught, I forget about it the year later. It's also boring as hell. I'm trying to listen to the teacher, but it just doesn't interest me. I can't seem to pay attention.

If anybody has any tips on how to focus in history class, please give me a shout. Thanks.

Re: History

Unless you're actually interested in History, there really isn't a way you can focus in it. And about 99 % of kids in school are not interested in it.

Re: History

I think history is actually quite interesting, but nt when you learn about the same country, the US, for all of elementary and middle school. People wonder why Americans know so little of the outside world due to the faact that we only ever learn of the US.

Re: History

I don't even live in the US, and in my school they teach us about it. I barely know anything about the past of my own country.

But, you know, I kinda like my History classes. Not because of the content, but because of the teacher. She is one of the coolest teacher I have ever had. Tied in first place with Health and Math.

Re: History

yea history is easy for me. and you kinda need it to reconize things. so they wont happen again

life is just blah blah blah. we hope for blah, and sometimes we find it. but mostly its blah. and waiting for blah. and hoping you were right about the blahs you made. and when you think you just got the whole blah damn thing figured out, and your surrounded by the ones you blah. death shows up and blah blah blah.

Re: History

Here's my trick for paying attention in any class. Take notes in different color pens, and try to organize it as you write it. Not only will you be focusing and such (you do have to try a little. The pens arn't going to magically cure you, but they help), but your notes will be more fun to look at. Smile

As for the subject itself, I think it's important to know, if you plan on going into anything like politics, and especially if you ever become wealthy. Why? Because first of all, a big reason that we learn about and remember the past is so that it never happens again. We remember the Holocaust, and preserve Aushwitz as a reminder of what can happen when humanity goes wrong. That's why it's important for politics. And it's important if you're wealthy because chances are, people will ask you to donate to things like "WWII veterens club" and mueseums and stuff like that.

Also, I find history class EXTREMELY boring too. Why? Because the manner in which they teach it is so uninteresting. Taking notes on stuff is the farthest thing away from actually caring about what it is. It just seems so unreal when you're sitting in a blasted prison cell, looking at a power point with a few shmultzy pictures pulled off of google on it.

So, my recommendation is to watch a movie, or a series on history channel about it. It's way more interesting. There's this good one called The Revolution where they reenact battles and stuff. Way more real (if you don't notice the airplane trails in the sky =P)- way more exciting. Movies like 300 and stuff, while not completely historically accurate, will give you an idea of the big picture, which is more important than the specifics.
