RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Languages that open doors...

I've been reconsidering what languages I want to learn. Right now the best one I know is (obviously) Japanese and I basically completely forgot the little I knew of others.

In the business world and the political world, what are the languages that will "open doors" for you that you otherwise would not have?

Mandarin? German? Spanish? French? Russian?

What should Gaiyara do Onii-chan? ♡

Re: Languages that open doors...

If you're exclusively looking for a language that has applications in business Mandarin is probably you're best bet. It has more speakers than any other language, but it is very difficult to learn (Difficult tonal and writing systems and each region of China has a very different dialect).

Spanish is very easy to learn and it is widely spoken.

I'd choose a language that your interested in, no point in learning a language if you can't be motivated enough to work at it.

Latin. Although not a spoken language, most European languages are based off of Latin, thus making learning a language easier.

Re: Languages that open doors...

A lot of niche market languages can often be the way to go, so really it depends. Learning mandarin, spanish, french, japanese, etc. warrant a gigantic and competitive environment. Lithuanian, on the other hand, isn't so hardcore.

So really, unless its a super folksy australian hunter-gatherer society language (unless you wanna drop out of agricultural society) youll do ok, just find one you like, find pretty, w/e, and roll accordingly.

The only reason to learn Latin is so to use the ATM machines in Vatican City.

German. More of our shit than you think comes from Germany, and I only exspect this to increase.

Good points Ahab. I'm learning Tagalog with the help of my mom (she's Filipina). I wonder if it'd be easy to get a job in the philippines if I'm a Tagalog speaker educated at an american university. Smile

Foriegn countries, including the phillipines hire native english speakers to be ESL teachers, for both kids and adults. Usually all you need is a bachelors as opposed to working in the states which requires a masters and a state certification.

Re: Languages that open doors...

I was briefly interested in teaching English in Japan, but then I found out how unfulfilling of a job it was because there are so many people doing that in Japan right now.

Re: Languages that open doors...

I think it would really depend what you're doing in your life and who you associate with. If you do business in Germany, being fluent in German is certainly a good thing, but if you're doing business in China, for example, German may be next to useless and instead you may want to learn Chinese. It's hard to say which language is the international (business) language (well, okay, apart from english), really.
