Because it is what society has come to believe over time.

'Nuff said.

The answer is probably "no," but humans are lazy. Why try another way if the current way "works" ?

School is important... because... eh, many people (some teachers included, at least those from my school) think of school not so much as a place to go and learn, but a place to go and learn how to socialise and behave in society.

Re: Why is school "important"? - Kirby - 02-12-2010 04:15 AM

Why is school important? It depends on what you mean by "school".

Take a knife for example. A "knife" only exists as a part of the human mind. We give purpose a sharp piece of metal. Now, a knife can be broken or dull but still be a knife but there comes a point where it is so broken is stops being a knife entirely. Similarily, what we call a school has particular characteristics. These are the ideal conditions that are sought. A school is an institution of education. If the school teaches badly, it is a bad school. If it doesn't teach at all, it is not a school. I believe the public education system, at least in my part of Canada, is a bad school but I'm sure there are "schools" that do not deserve that label.

So the question becomes "is education important?". I say undoubtedly yes! Prosperity of the individual and society is based on savings and hard work. Education, whether in complex sciences or just plumbing, is a form of investment. Of course, education for it's own sake isn't always a wise investment from a financial point of view but many people learn anyways for as an investment in themselves.

Yes. I meant I can't think of any specific examples.

Why is tradition important?

This is the truth of conservatism. If something has been done for a long time in a certain way, the burden of proof is on people who oppose it.

It's a side effect of passing on stuff. You can pass on success, but mistakes as well.

Then why don't they let you talk?

No, because he's an asshole, unless he was like this all the time.

Win. This on many levels.

Because everyone who disagrees with what you say is an asshole.

I totally agree with you! I've been thinking about this actually. People are so obsessed with systems and shit. School is only important because people make it important, even money. They say we only go to school to get a job and eventually earn money. It's always about money. MONEY. MONEY. MONEY. It's BULLSHIT. Why don't we just get rid of the system of money? Money is just paper and metal. If only people were kind enough, then we'd all just be willing to give stuff to each other.. no need for money. And with that, there wouldn't be any poor people. No one would be tempted to steal or anything because everyone would just be willing to give. But sadly, this system—I think—will never end. :(

Re: Why is school "important"? - Nah - 02-22-2010 05:36 PM

The problem with that is that there are always people who will want to take advantage of others. You may be kind and give me food when I'm starving, but who says I will repay it when you need it? Some people are cruel and capitalistic, no matter what system they are in. And then these people will come to dominate everyone, thus creating a dictatorship.

tldr; communism doesn't work because people are tools.

On topic: some people like systems. It makes them feel comfortable. Freedom and choices confuse some people, who like things to be planned and sedentary. We have just as much right to force them out of their system as they do to force us into it. That's why I believe optional schooling is the best option, or allowing people to take whatever your country's version of a final exam whenever they feel they are ready.

Since we've "evolved" from being nomadic peoples whose basic instinct was survival, we now have permanent socieites. Of course, while most conform to the group to maintain such a society, there are always those few who are not comfortable being just like everybody else. That's where school and basically government come in. It keeps people in line. Most accept it because that's what they're prone to do, but those who don't are labeled "troublemakers" so the rest of the pack looks down on them and their "anarchy" isn't taken seriously. There needs to be something to keep people in line, and school is preparation for just that.

I realize my explanation is over-simplistic, but that's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this topic. In a way, school keeps most of the youth as consumers rather than unemployed expected to keep a job, and it instills the basic skills of conforming and putting up with bullshit while letting little gadgets and gizmos (the new ipad, tvs, food, etc) distract them from what's really going on.

A lot of people think this is so radical that It's not even worth considering but I am so glad there are people like you to throw these kinds of thoughts out there. Just because it's the way things are doesn't mean it has to be the way things stay. Perhaps, just visualizing this kind of society is important. It gives me some (small) hope that there are at least some sails set in this kind of direction.

They lived without it because primitive communism works well in very small populations.

It's been a psychological process of associating it with education. The same way smoking is associated with the 'cool' crowd. Takes genius marketing, I'm sure. People are quick to tell me that without public school there would be no social outlet and education of children. It's a paradoxical conditioning like smoking, where you take something you don't need and get brainwashed into thinking that it's some sort of nessecity for yourself (though in the case of school this applies to everyone else).

Don't get me wrong, schools a decent step in places like India, but still, if you look at how DUMB this generation is compared to other generations (my manager used to pass around an 8th grade exit exam from the early 60s, mind you just the early 60s, that no college graduates could probably pass) even with such an advancement in technology, you start to get a clue of what's fucked up. It lets the rich white man thrive and the poor ghetto kids become criminals.
