Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - An_Angry_Bastard - 05-24-2017 02:42 AM

I am fully aware that it's risky to bash an online education program as my first post on a forum like this, but hear me out.
Edgenuity, or E2020 was assigned to me by my school so I can keep studying even though I'm out of school for a while (I really don't want to get into why). It fucking sucks. If you think that traditional schools brainwash you, you will be ASTOUNDED by how much a committee has fucked the courses. There's just so much bullshit, the questions are designed to trick you and not to test your understanding, the teachers are incompetent, and the courses are very narrow in their scope for any one subject.
I never thought I'd say this but I miss traditional school because at least there, when I tried and when my teacher gave a shit (a rare combination I admit), I would understand something and not just memorize shit for a test.
I understand why people like online classes. Don't get me wrong, the fact that I can test out of lessons before I take them has had me flying through shit at a rate I could never do in real life. But even stuff that interests me (english and history) are fucking awful in this program and I barely pay attention.
I don't claim to know how to make an individualized system that works for everyone. I don't even know how to fix edgenuity. I'm just pissed off at this stupid fucking setup, and I hope that seeing my pissed off rant might help some other people who don't like this class.

Sounds like the program is just in general shitty, rather than the whole field of online education being shitty.

Man I don't know this is just my little bubble that I see and that pisses me off

Let me tell you something, education is that thing that happens when you are doing what you really want to.

little birdie told you online classes are good? get yourself a pellet gun and shoot that little birdie. twiddling your dick is probably a better use of your time since the sad mess you leave behind at least offers some perspective.

btw, don't twiddle your dick, its not really good for you.

Quote:the questions are designed to trick you and not to test your understanding,

Yes. And then when you miss one question it's programmed to put you through about 20 minutes of review.

I was talking to a sixth grader recently and she was complaining that one of her teachers would only accept multiple choice answers but she prefers essay style answers so she can express what she knows without confinement (my words but that's what she was getting at). She was also talking about how they have to finish this and that or do it online during the summer. When I told her I passed everybody and let my students redesign any assessment to essay or just talking to me about it or even simply not doing it or doing something else entirely she couldn't believe it. She was like can you do that? I told her I'm the teacher and the grades are at my discretion and there's nothing in my contract that says I have to justify the grades a give by any certain criteria. I'm not sure what my point is but if everything wasn't so rigid I probably wouldn't go so far out on a limb to be freewheeling about it. Other teachers talk about teaching "accountability". How about teaching them you don't HAVE to wield power over people just because you can? Of course, almost everything I try to do is a cacophonous disaster. But this is public school, it's nothing but disaster. For some of them they might see that at least I'm trying to provide them with a different sort of disaster.

Analogist, in another thread you mentioned that trying to implement the philosophy of Holt in my classroom was just weird and not good for anybody. I felt like that was an insightful and powerful characterization. I know there's truth in that but it's not lost on all my students that what I'm really doing is trying to say hey there's got to be some other way. So they're stuck in my failing experiment? I still get students who say very positive things about the experience. It's not nearly as different as I would want it to be but it's as different as I can make it. At least it's not the exact same format as every other teacher they have.

And Angry B wouldn't have to make up my class on a computer even if he chose to ignore me or even be hostile.

The power structure sucks. I know I'm a part of it but I've been paying my rent and I really am a change of pace to the degree I can be.

RE: Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - the Analogist - 05-30-2017 11:32 AM

The reason holt doesnt work in the classroom is because even the full-on switch to a Sudbury school, which is still a partial environment switch, the detox takes about 1-2 years.

although I was really productive while at community college, it wasnt until i left home and regularly conversed with actually interested smart people at my dorm away from home in another city that my intellect really began to develop.

your short term access to part of a kids day is almost a tease if not marginally productive sometimes. this is just something about the human spirit you need to face. you just cant fix much, the system does exactly what it was designed to do, and it does it well in spite of you.

I respect, understand, and agree with what you're saying...BUT, I don't think you're more aware of my limitations than I am. Is your only advice don't teach or do you have suggestions about how I should go about teaching my lessons?

RE: Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - the Analogist - 05-30-2017 06:24 PM

my advice would be based on the Three Category System. what subject is it?

also, yeah I know about MY limitations. I have... options... I could choose to be more poor, but im not going to choose that. I get you on that front too brother.

EDIT: i meant that the one good job I was able to get is probably the only option for good jobs that I have

RE: Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - TheCancer - 05-30-2017 09:06 PM

The belief that poverty is a choice will get drilled out of you unless you're very lucky.

RE: Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - the Analogist - 05-31-2017 12:03 AM

what subject do you teach again?

RE: Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - TheCancer - 05-31-2017 02:58 AM

behavior unit and social studies

history and civics

plus special education and reading remediation

grades 6-8

I have multiple certifications. I'm not sure what I'll do next year if I come back. They put me wherever they want. I've taught both math and science and English, too. Those three out of field. Math was by far the most work but behavior unit is the most unpleasant.

RE: Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - the Analogist - 05-31-2017 05:36 AM

what is "behavior unit?"

and how does school justify the distinction between history and "civics"? what is civics?

RE: Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - the Analogist - 05-31-2017 05:58 AM

also, this should be split and titled "helping theCancer prepare his lessons"

RE: Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - TheCancer - 05-31-2017 06:20 AM

Forget it. I'm on summer leave anyway.

Fuck Edgenuity/E2020 - HawkbitAlpha - 05-31-2017 09:11 AM

Oh god.

I used e2020 for my first semester of homeschooling, which was the second half of 8th grade. That was when I first joined here. It fucking SUCKED.

My biggest complaint is the video lessons. They always drag on for what feels like an hour per lesson, and put me to sleep. At least my previous curriculum (A Beka Academy) had some teachers who kept it interesting with humorous lectures and the like. E2020 was just plain boring.

And yes, the questions are shit. Pretty much every lesson is followed by some kind of quiz or questionnaire, and I could NEVER get 100% in any of them. Not even geography, which I fucking aced.

Don't even get me started on falling behind either. That whole thing nearly cost me my 8th grade year.
