So... yeah. A "node" crashed in the data center (whatever that means), and the server people needed to restore a backup.

Apparently, this process takes 3 days. I have no idea why it took so long, or why they were not better prepared for this in the first place.

My little temporary mirror server idea worked reasonably well though, and I'm doing research on how to set up something like that in a more automated manner, in case this happens again.

The host company I've been with for years recently got bought out by a bigger company, and they're going to move everything over to their data centers at some point in the near future. The new people claim to have 100% uptime, so maybe mirror servers won't be necessary... but hey, if I've learned something from this, it's to not trust anyone's claims of uptime, and to always have a backup plan in place for my most important sites.

Anyway, I'm guessing the database issues we had before this were probably also related to whatever went wrong with that node.

EDIT: It seems that some of the latest posts are missing... :( The backup they restored seems to have been about a day old. My latest backup is a couple of hours even older than the one they restored though, so... I guess this is as good as it gets.

Yeah. It fucking sucks. I lost my posts too. I was wondering why I had lost my posts before. Then I read this.

I'm testing CloudFlare on one of my other sites, might use it on SS as well if it looks like it'll work well. Seems like it'd make things like this a bit less messy if it happens again.
