School Survival on Reddit - Hansgrohe - 08-02-2016 04:43 PM

Guys, forget Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. School Survival needs a Reddit.

Internet forums are slowly dying off and pretty much becoming dinosaurs. We're essentially being left behind. However, reddit is much different; it's much easier to access on mobiles, it's much more user-friendly, and we could easily transfer users and some threads onto a theoretical new subreddit. In addition, promoting a Reddit is MUCH easier than this forum. It could go hand in hand with FB and Twitter.

Hmm... well, it's true that I've been using reddit a lot lately. I suppose that probably would be a pretty good idea.

I don't even have an account, but I have been considering making one.

* SoulRiser adds to todo list

I think one of the things I like best about it is that you can pick and choose which communities - or subreddits, as they're called - you want to be a part of. Some of them are pretty cool. Others are horrible and filled with toxic people. And still others are diamonds in the rough.

If SS comes to reddit, we'll definitely have to aim for that third category.

Good on you, Soul.

Reddit is much more quicker, efficient, and I love the layout. We can probably reach out to larger anti-school communities too.

Reddit is terrible. Other than the structure and the lack of a real name requirement, it's no better than Facebook.

Why does everybody hate self-hosted forum systems all of a sudden?
Maybe MyBB could use a more modern replacement though.

RE: School Survival on Reddit - Username - 08-04-2016 12:44 AM

I actually agree with Jop for once.

RE: School Survival on Reddit - the Analogist - 08-04-2016 03:42 AM

Reddit on the side and/or in addition too. Migrating towards the "better" as part of groupthink seems quite opposed to the spirit that brought us here.

Also I fear change. I also like the prospects of more attention because I dont feel like the people here as adversarial as I would like for my purposes. Introverts who are shy and not so confident seem unwilling to engage with my ideas. I want to write a book, but it would be lame if i have no idea what to expect in the way of reception

I agree. I think the forums should still be kept. Reddit should be on the side, not the complete replacement.

Well, at least you're honest.

Creating a School Survival subreddit would be a low-effort, low-maintenance, potentially-high-payoff method of connecting with the current generation of disgruntled survivors. An anti-school, pro-education lean actually appears to be somewhat prevalent over there, so it's not like we'd be totally out of place.

School Survival on Reddit - SoulRiser - 08-04-2016 07:03 AM

Of course the forums are going to be kept. lol... There is no "migrating"... it's more like expanding.

There's also a good chance many of the people with reddit accounts won't want others to see what they post on an anti-school subreddit, so they may prefer to come here instead.

It will probably be easier to rank a Reddit page thingy in Google than any of my owned domains, so that should bring more traffic to SS as well... hopefully.

Ugh, some bastard stole SoulRiser already. I settled for Rising_Soul. Apparently I can't create a subreddit for 30 days, so this will have to wait a bit. Razz

I've been a redditor for awhile. I could take care of it and then add you guys as moderators.

School Survival on Reddit - SoulRiser - 08-04-2016 09:13 AM

Are moderators as powerful as admins? ... Or whatever the most powerful 'rank' is on reddit...

The site itself has a team of administrators, or so I've heard, but I often forget they're even there. For that reason, the moderators of individual subreddits tend to be regarded by all as the authorities of their own domains.

School Survival on Reddit - SoulRiser - 08-04-2016 11:26 AM

Ah, ok. So we'll all be the same 'rank' on it then... Cool, go for it!

Name it "School Survival" if you can. (Can this even be changed later?)

School Survival on Reddit - Ky - 08-04-2016 12:35 PM

Pretty much, though I think whoever creates the subreddit is the only one who can appoint moderators, though I don't recall off the top of my head whether that can be changed or not.

As far as naming goes, you can't change the name once you've created it, it's case-sensitive (but you cannot have a subreddit name consisting of the same sequence of letters as another, regardless of case), and since it's intended to be part of a URL, it can't contain spaces. I hope "SchoolSurvival" isn't taken.

Hans, if you have a reddit account that's more than a month old, I'd rather you create it. If not, I'll take care of it.

RE: School Survival on Reddit - the Analogist - 08-05-2016 06:48 AM

Reddit annoys me. But i might just cave and participate...

School Survival on Reddit - Ky - 08-09-2016 04:45 AM

I have created /r/School_Survival.

/r/SchoolSurvival was already taken by HeilKaiba about three years ago - he and Brain are that sub's moderators, though it doesn't seem as though they've done much of anything with it.

Anywho, I ask that our forum's moderators share their reddit usernames so that I can add them to /r/School_Survival's mod list.

School Survival on Reddit - Ky - 08-09-2016 06:03 AM

Update: Picked a subreddit theme similar in color scheme to our site, configured the stylesheet the way I wanted it, enabled customizable flairs, gave /u/Rising_Soul a moderator invite. We are go for launch - all we need now are users.

School Survival on Reddit - SoulRiser - 08-10-2016 10:33 AM

Awesome, thanks! Biggrin

School Survival on Reddit - Ky - 08-10-2016 10:54 AM

So... what else do we do with it now that we have it?

Start posting topics there. If only we could make up our minds about what to post...

Anything pertaining to school survival, opposition to compulsory education, promotion of youth rights... I'd love it if someone other than myself were a contributor.

School Survival on Reddit - Hansgrohe - 08-10-2016 04:26 PM

Hey DoA,

I'm Doolicks on Reddit, please add me as mod on Reddit (don't ask why).

Thanks

School Survival on Reddit - Hansgrohe - 08-11-2016 08:29 AM

On another note, we really should be promoting the Reddit well. We should put a news notice on the front page of the site, I'll create a sticky on here too.

RE: School Survival on Reddit - the Analogist - 08-13-2016 04:11 AM

I don't know what essay topic I'll be writing next for my "Musings", but I'd like to post it to Reddit and see how many views it gets on the forums.

When I'm on my phone I cant see how many views threads have. I wonder what people think about my views on wikipedia

School Survival on Reddit - Ky - 08-13-2016 04:15 AM

Go for it.

RE: School Survival on Reddit - the Analogist - 08-13-2016 04:23 AM

I feel like I need to actually sit at a real computer later. I has a reddit. But phone computing i do not like

School Survival on Reddit - the Analogist - 08-13-2016 08:41 AM

Just thought I would post the whole essay as a post on the subreddit. I still kinda don't get reddit. I'm sure it will make sense eventually.
