Bank accounts for people under 18, free from parental control - SoulRiser - 04-25-2016 05:20 AM

Anyone got any information about things like this? Can someone under 18 in your area have a real, genuine, bank account that is actually entirely theirs, and free from parental interference? If so, how?

The closest thing I've been able to find is this:
http://banking.about.com/od/childrenandsaving/fl/Bank-Accounts-for-People-Under-18.htm

The best option there is this one:

Quote:If the goal is for the minor to use the account (make deposits and withdrawals, for example), a joint account will do the trick.

Simply open an account with at least one adult as an account holder. That account can be a plain-vanilla joint account, or an account designed for the under-18 crowd.

In some cases, the adult needs to be a family member or legal guardian, but some banks allow anybody to be the joint owner (Capital One 360, for example).

... but obviously it still requires an adult, and doesn't say anything about whether or not the parents have to be notified of this account's existence in some way (I'm guessing they probably do).

I want to research this because it seems laws and banks make it unnecessarily difficult for someone under 18 to make money and get paid and become financially independent from their parents earlier than 18 if they would really like to do that for whatever reason.

I'm not so sure there's much to research here. It's kind of an unspoken legal assumption that minors don't truly have the right to personal property of any kind; they merely inherit their parents' or guardians'.

Yeah. And it seems people on legal forums are really condescending towards people who would like some rights:

It's like... you have to have a job and have lived apart from your parents for at least 6 months to be able to be emancipated... but without your parents' permission, you can't do either of those things in the first place. And if you can get their permission to do that stuff in the first place, it obviously means they're at least somewhat on your side anyway, and emancipation doesn't even seem necessary.

The law clearly does not give a crap about people with asshole parents, unless the parents hit them hard and often enough for it to qualify as 'obvious abuse', and then there still has to be a huge dramatic social services intervention. It's ludicrous.

At least you guys have those. The parenting culture here is truly toxic...and as much as I hate the Turds, I can admit that they were one of the sane ones. (Calling your daughter a future whore if she doesn't study-multiple times, implying that every man without exception WILL rape her if given the chance, countless scare tactics, emotional dismissal and abuse...and I'm calling my parents sane. That's how bad the situation is in India.)

Not that saner, better people don't exist.

Financial independence is an important part of our rights. Glad to see this post.

I go to my corner store and buy visa gift cards with cash. It can be used online and offline.

It's difficult if not impossible to find such a bank simply because of legal regulations and insurance liabilities.

I'd personally agree with the idea that if a child is emancipated(with legal documents to back it), they should have the same rights one would at 18, but that's probably something that has to be tested in court or brought up in legislation.

I transfered money yesterday from my savings account to my checking account to get my parents Christmas presents. This morning, I got a text from my mom saying she saw the transfer. I have a feeling that she can gain complete access, and take money from my account to hers. I'm not saying I don't trust her, but just saying.

Depending on the purpose, a prepaid debit card may work instead of a traditional bank account. Sometimes these have a monthly fee and/or some kind of fee to reload, but they can be used online or in person. Most also have an option to register and get a personalized card if you give them more information, but that may require being 18+, not sure. These cards can sometimes also accept direct deposit.

It may be worth asking at any local credit unions about accounts for minors. It also seems that it may be possible in some cases to open a savings account as a minor, but checking accounts may be difficult without a cosigner. One option is to find an adult other than your parents who is willing to co-sign on an account, just make sure it's someone you trust and don't keep large amounts of money in it.

If you can get paid by paper check, it should be possible to cash it without a bank account, either by going to the bank it's from or by going to a check-casher and paying a fee.

I also found this article about minors being able to open bank accounts in India, if that applies to anyone -- 10-year-olds can open and operate bank account alone: RBI
