Is there anyone else here who would like to try and get support for emojis on SS? I'm just thinking that it would be nice to have emoji support. Though, if it is still possible, to keep support for the smilies currently used in addition to emojis.

What the hell are these emoji things people keep talking about? It seems to be something mobile-only?

I wish I knew.

They are basically the same thing as the emoticons we already have on this site. As it's not possible to enter the emoticons we have now on mobile, I agree integrating them into the site in conjuction with the emoticons we already have is a good idea.

This allows you to integrate emoji's into the site: https://github.com/emojidex/emojidex-web

It is possible to enter them on mobile, you just need to type in the code for them... or use the full version editor and click on them there.

I'm not going to add support for things that I think are unnecessary and dumb (and not always compatible with other things, it seems)...

I personally don't love emojis, but they are pretty popular and it would be a pretty great idea that will likely not happen.

They are compatible with what we have now...

Emoji Support - SoulRiser - 10-16-2015 05:49 AM

But aren't they based on font files or some stuff that doesn't necessarily display on all devices and browsers?

RE: Emoji Support - sswbm - 10-16-2015 09:53 PM

Yes, but this is exactly why emoji support by the site is needed. Emoji's can be entered right now, but they won't be converted to image files, meaning only browsers/devices with emoji font support can display them.

What site-integrated emoji support does, is convert the font things to image files so they can be displayed by all browsers/devices.

Interesting...

OK, if you can find me a MyBB plugin that handles it all automatically, I'll probably install it. Smile

Exactly how would you enter an emoji anyway?

Hold on, I'll find you something soon...

With an emoji keyboard.

Comes standard on most new phones. And also on some computers. (Mac has one, Linux soon, Windows doesn't AFAIK)

Emoji Support - schoolsux - 10-19-2015 02:03 AM

Hopefully Windows gets an emoji keyboard soon.

Or you could, y'know, install Linux.

Emoji Support - SoulRiser - 10-19-2015 06:13 AM

But those emoji things are app-specific, aren't they?

... how is this any different from just using the smilies? It seems like they just invented a new word for 'emoticon'...

... I just don't get it...

Say you have an emoji keyboard, and enter one in a comment box on a site... what kind of input does the site actually receive?

No.

It's not really different from using the smiles indeed, but they can be entered on mobile without knowing any codes or switching to the desktop version. And there simply are more of them so I think they'll be a nice addition to the smiles we already have.

A Unicode character.

There doesn't seem to be a MyBB plugin for this yet, so I'll have to write it myself. Be patient Smile

It will probably be very popular and you will be famous. Razz

Smilies are just retro emojis. Fu

Pretty much. However, there are more emojis than smilies.
