Teacher appreciation week - G1996pw - 05-08-2014 01:13 AM

So what do you guys think of teacher appreciation week?

Teacher appreciation week - TheShadow - 05-08-2014 01:47 AM

For the good teachers? The nice ones that actually seem to care about you? They deserve some of my appreciation. For the mean ones? The ones that don't give two shits? They can go screw themselves Biggrin

That happens to be the majority of them. Shrug

Teachers deserve more appreciation than they get. They're underpaid, for the most part locked into their professions, and they have to deal with hordes of imprisoned children and teenagers. The system doesn't just screw adolescents over; it screws everybody over.

What DoA said.

This is why I (and probably most of the people on here) think that school shouldn't be compulsory, or think that you should be able to choose all your classes. I'd imagine trying to get a bunch of unmotivated teenagers to try and do stuff they don't want to do is not very fun, for both the teachers and the students.

For the most part, I agree with this, except for the bolded line.

It's kind of their fault for picking such a shitty profession.

Teacher appreciation week - Trar - 05-08-2014 01:51 PM

Not all of them could have foreseen that, Hawkbit. Is it their fault they didn't know, that they didn't even know they didn't know? It's definitely not their fault things are the way they are; JTG said the system is more or less a self-sustaining mass that sucks people in to keep itself going. It's not so much a hive mind as it is an incidental perpetual motion machine that uses human will and suffering as fuel.

It's like the people that support the public school system are indeed adding fuel to the fire especially if it's already lit.

To me there is no such thing as a good teacher, more like manipulators trying to push the notion that school is education and that you should trust them which is upsurd.

Well they choose to do the crappy job, deal with the burden of a failed system and just accept it all because they chose to be a teacher no matter how much they get paid they will keep being one. Especially when they continue to ruin this generation of society because they refuse to do anything to change the way things work to truly make a difference!

Teacher appreciation week - Ky - 05-09-2014 04:17 AM

Many believed (in most cases incorrectly) that a teaching profession would be worthwhile, or that they would make a positive difference in people's lives. This belief is rarely a fault of their own, but the result of a horrible lie the system perpetuates in order to keep running.

Take, for example, teachers who are members of this forum, like TheCancer. They got their jobs hoping that they would find a way to improve the education of the next generations only to find that any attempt to change the way things work is both impossible and would also most likely result in their termination. By that point, the prospect for finding other jobs is pretty low; even minimum wage jobs, where due to a form of ageism employers seek new hires that are younger than any fired teachers.

Speaking of which, another form of ageism is adultism, which may lead a minority of bad teachers to actively seek professions where they have the ability to harm the minds of students. Sad, but true, but also not very common.

All told, teachers have just as much ability (or perhaps even less) to change the system as the oppressed students do. You're not thinking big-picture.

RE: Teacher appreciation week - G1996pw - 05-09-2014 08:26 AM

The big picture is better test scores equal more money put to make school last

Teacher appreciation week - James Comey - 05-09-2014 02:10 PM

Test scores can also indirectly lead to higher property values. The higher the test score of an area, the more it's perceived to be achieving = higher property value.

Heh.... I wonder if every student in the US decided to tank the test....

RE: Teacher appreciation week - TheCancer - 05-10-2014 07:03 PM

Thanks DoA.

Most teachers, myself included, are just kind of teachers by default. When you're on your own in the world and you're between jobs there's not really much choice in the matter. The only thing I would probably rather be homeless and die than do is to join the military or be a weapons manufacturer.

I did choose to go into special education because I wanted to somehow help kids with disabilities. Back then, I didn't know that being angry and hating school was considered a disability. I know I've posted stuff on here about the whole endeavor being totally worthless but over the past couple of years I've started to feel a little differently. I used to feel like just being a part of the system made me part of the problem. Now I think that's an oversimplification. I've softened on this position because more and more the weirdest, most outcast, angriest students in the school connect with me more strongly than any other teacher and in a lot of cases any other person in the school. I'm sorry if I sound boastful, but these kids light up when they see me. I stand-up for the freaks and weirdos during class, in the halls, and at parent meetings. So many times now I've watched teachers start to gang up on students at conferences with parents and I don't let that continue. I had a girl who cut up in my class all the time. Never shut up. Ignored me. Used bad language. Wouldn't let me teach. And her mom came and met with all her teachers with her in the room and every teacher smashed into her saying she was lazy and disrespectful. But every time I interjected with her good points. She's loyal to her friends. It's not her fault she's bored. It's healthy and natural to be rebellious. And when it was my turn I just lied. I said she's a great kid (that's not a lie), and that she does her work and is respectful. I know her mom knew I was lying but it still softened her mother's face. Later the other teachers accused me of 'enabling' her bad behavior and not holding her to any standard. But the girl stepped into my class just by surprise during another class that she isn't in and said in front of the class, "I love you, TheCancer." Sure, she was playing it off like a joke but it went straight to my heart. I've always been right on the edge of getting fired but I hated school when I was forced to go. And I never had a teacher like me. Again, I know I'm bragging but I'm not lying.

But anyway, I don't care about teacher appreciation week. It's not about other adults appreciating me. I don't need or want some kind of Mother's Day for teachers. I just want to live with myself knowing I've been an ally to the most disenfranchised kids out there.

Teacher appreciation week - Ky - 05-11-2014 12:39 AM

While it may not seem like it, there are more teachers out there like TheCancer, and more still who have a positive motivation of a different nature. There are people who actually seek to educate rather than indoctrinate, there are those who want to hear what their class truly has to say rather than shutting them up, and there are educators who treat their students with respect rather than seeing them as the means to make a paycheck. These, all of these, are the teachers who definitely deserve appreciation, and they don't deserve just one day or week of it.

And if we ever do introduce widespread change into the school system, we do it in the hopes that it will inspire more people to be like this.

Personally I don't get anything for the teachers, mostly because number one most of them suck and number two the ones that don't do not need gifts.

Teacher appreciation week - James Comey - 05-11-2014 02:46 AM

"Most of them suck" sounds like a generalization. There are many that try to at least make learning interesting.

I won't say you have to sell them your soul or something, because the education system has a multitude of issues. However, I think with the good ones, they do deserve some slack.
