My family wants me to get confirmed. I have to study a bunch of religious stuff until May 9th. So, what's the problem here?

I'm a deist/theist. I personally don't believe in religion. However, I've never told my family this. In addition, if I said this, right now, I know my family will get really pissed. They'll think I'm possessed or something like that. And you know what's worse?

My family doesn't go to church. Not in years. They don't practice Christianity. They're not dedicated in any way. Worse, my brother is an absolute sociopath, but he has religious symbols, etc, probably because he believes that because he's so dedicated to god, regardless of his sociopathy, he's protected. Fuck, him. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Sigh.... well, it can't be too bad. I guess I'll just have to study it enough that I'll be fine, and then I can pretty go back to my normal self after May 9th. Seriously though, I wasn't expecting this.

Yeah, you need to say something. Even though I've been putting it off, I need to do it before confirmation. Better that than desecrating a ceremony by lying to the clergy, IMHO.

I don't think I have much choice here. My family pretty much got me the material and my bro had to travel for hours to collect it (Stockton).

Unfortunately, It looks like I might have to lie in front of a clergy. They're going to get real pissed if I tell them.....

Hmmm...

This suggestion may sound extremely stupid, depending on what kind of church it is.

But maybe you can ask someone at the church about it? I think that in most cases a priest/social worker/whatever you have would rather you not lie... And if they are any more sympathetic than your parents, they can maybe help convince them.

On the other hand, if it's the wrong kind of church, doing that could just make everything worse.

Yeah, I'm "agnostic" or an atheist or however you wanna call it, and I pretty much just stuck it out and slowly stopped going to church and then just never admitted to my family anything, because fuck it.
