Just because you get annoyed by warnings, does not mean that we should remove them. Rape victims can easily get flashbacks, which can lead to potential suicide.

You want someone to commit suicide just because you're annoyed?

Yes they need to take control of their own shit.
Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but these rape victims want me to put some like *TRIGGER WARNING* every time I say a word that just might make them...what exactly? Scared they're about to get raped again? Sorry I just don't buy it.

hey, sugar. you don't understand trauma. instead of spewing your dangerous ignorance all over the internet, you should do some research.

Yea yea the whole "no one understands" or "only people like me understand" argument. Quite silly and it is a cop out.

correction: you do not understand.

here's a link for your education.

-not everyone can afford to get professional help.

-no one can predict a sudden mention of rape/abuse/suicide/what-have-you

-just because someone reacts to trauma differently doesn't make them oversensitive or a bad person

RE: Trigger warning! - UnschoolShqiponjë - 03-25-2012 12:59 PM

Bad person? Absolutely not. Oversensitive? Definitely a possibility.

How dare you say I don't understand. The difference is I don't go waving around a victim card. Which is why I never mentioned this thing that happened in my life until now.

I am not talking about professional help. In my opinion professional help is bullshit.

Okay too bad for them. I will not trigger warning anything. It is not my responsibility and I am not forcing my writing on anyone.

RE: Trigger warning! - Blobthe15 - 03-25-2012 01:02 PM

Well partially it depends. If you casually mention something that might be taken as sexual you don't need to do a trigger warning. But if you have a 3 page paper on a descriptive story about how you got raped you probably do need to. I mean, I don't see any trouble in it. It's not like it's just all over the fucking place.

Let's put it this way, if it gets worse than bronies, then there's a problem with either how much rape is actually happening or people's sensitivity levels.

And you say just to go get treatment, like it's that easy, that you can just apply a creme and it'll all go away forever.

Quote:After a traumatic experience, a person may re-experience the trauma mentally and physically, hence avoiding trauma reminders, also called triggers, as this can be uncomfortable and even painful. They may turn to psychoactive substances including alcohol to try to escape the feelings. Re-experiencing symptoms are a sign that the body and mind are actively struggling to cope with the traumatic experience.[5]
Triggers and cues act as reminders of the trauma, and can cause anxiety and other associated emotions. Often the person can be completely unaware of what these triggers are. In many cases this may lead a person suffering from traumatic disorders to engage in disruptive or self-destructive coping mechanisms, often without being fully aware of the nature or causes of their own actions. Panic attacks are an example of a psychosomatic response to such emotional triggers.

RE: Trigger warning! - UnschoolShqiponjë - 03-25-2012 01:06 PM

What people who experience trauma need is a strong family/friend support system. Those who don't have it are screwed either way for the most part unless they have a strong enough mind to move themselves through and past it. Treatment is often BS. Psychology is too young of a field and too vague and very causational.

your way of reacting to trauma is not everyone else's, and it's really not ok to disrespect other people's problems. (i'd like to apologize id i sounded dismissive of your experience, though, that was real dick move of mine.)

you don't have to tag things for trigger warnings. but on the chance that someone does read it and is triggered, lots of pain and strife could've been avoided if you'd just written a few more words.

*i just realized how much i sound like a tumblr person ewwwwww

RE: Trigger warning! - Sapphire Flames - 03-25-2012 01:23 PM

I've been through a tad bit of trauma myself, and I may shudder and think "Jesus Dick that was horrible" but it's not like I get vivid flashbacks, but I can understand why *TRIGGER WARNING* would be in quite a few places.

RE: Trigger warning! - UnschoolShqiponjë - 03-25-2012 02:25 PM

I'm sorry I don't like the excusing mentality "oh that's just how they react they can't help it" and then people go and promote and encourage such behavior "put triggers for them! It'll be your fault if they go crazy!"

There are few situations where I truly believe that a traumatic experience was truly traumatic enough for a person to have trigger issues regardless of support they received after the event. War, rape over a period of time (especially that committed by a family member). Call me heartless but a lot of it people just need to get over it. Humans are very resilient, strong, adaptive. A lot of issues come from this over bearing view that many people promote that "oh my god you were permanent damaged and this awful vile terrible disgusting thing was done to you and you are forever tainted." etc etc. It just compounds the initial damage. I get called a rape apologist if I give that view point. lol

they really cant help it.

being triggered is a terrible, uncomfortable experience, and they're not just doing it for shits and giggles. if they could stop being triggered, they would. you can't just make them get over it by saying "LOL OK YOU'RE DONE BEING TRAUMATIZED TIME TO GET OVER IT." some will heal at their own pace, if at all.

can we agree that being triggered is a real thing that people are not making up? and therefore, they deserve respect and accommodation?

That's the point. Trigger warnings are there so you can avoid triggers. Are you really an idiot or are you just trolling?

I trigger a penis into UnschoolShqiponje ignorant asshole.
Dude, SERIOUSLY, trigger warnings are there so you won't have triggers by events from the past.

It shouldn't be my responsibility to put trigger warning every time I write something someone MIGHT read and...I still don't know what reading a word/sentence will do to them! Will it scare them? Do they think they're rapist/husband's murderer/whatever is about to come back? Most likely they get a sense of discomfort. I read things related to things that have happened to me (and yes, they have) and I don't feel that much. Maybe because I'm not a rape victim? Maybe because my trauma wasn't as bad (I thought it was, but I'm sure these feminists would tell me I've never experienced real trauma)?

Also, how am I supposed to know when to write trigger warning? Every word in the english language could be considered a trigger. The rape victim reading what I wrote could have raped by a guitar, so every time I write 'guitar' they have a 'trigger'. Which does...what, again?

Oh yes. Look at it here folks.

Bulgvar posts something that can act as a clear trigger. In fact, Bulgvar often posts crap that can be clear triggers but never offers trigger warnings. Then Levio goes and quotes it with a smiley. Well look at the two hypocritical pieces of garbage. Time to add Levio to the ignore list. I never really did like his posts but this stupidity is going too far.

If you are going to have a certain viewpoint, at least back it up.

"I trigger a penis into UnschoolShqiponje ignorant asshole" is not a trigger. And who are you to call us out? You hate triggers. This is where I call you a hypocrite. If you're bored you should do something constructive rather than making provocative threads at the expense of people who have been traumatized.

TRIGGER WARNING

RE: Trigger warning! - cuttlefishCuller - 03-27-2012 05:48 AM

it's really not the hard to mark a trigger warning. just preface something with a phrase along the lines of "TRIGGER WARNING FOR X" and continue on with your business. if someone asks for you to warm for something, add the warning.

please don't insinuate that it hurts you more to mark for triggers than it does for someone to be triggered.

If someone asks you to warn for something? What the fuck, that means they were JUST thinking about it!!!

or they're asking you to warn because they know other people might be triggered.
