UNSCHOOL! TELL US RIGHT NOW WTF YOURE TALKING ABOUT! PLEEEEEEASE! *sets self on fire*

RE: Trigger warning! - UnschoolShqiponjë - 03-23-2012 01:42 AM

I was reading the Amazing Atheists blog and he re-blogged this feminist teen girl. I went this girls blog where she talks about how she was is a feminist and what not, she linked to a story about how she was raped but the link to her story says *TRIGGER WARNING* I noticed people doing this "trigger" bullshit a lot. Her story wasn't even that horrid either. I've heard and experienced worse though technically what happened isn't exactly considered rape lol but it was unpleasant none-the-less. lol

ITT: I think trigger warnings for rape or abuse stories are stupid and that most (not all) people who experience "triggers" are fucking bullshit.

RE: Trigger warning! - magikarp - 03-23-2012 12:39 PM

But who was PTSD

RE: Trigger warning! - Unwilling_Authority - 03-23-2012 12:43 PM

What like trigger words, or like situations occurring that make people remember bad things that happened to them ? Like in movies and shit when you see Nam' vets having flashbacks because something said a word or something happened.

People create their own issues. People self-diagnose and inflict themselves with issues for whatever reason.

To shame people for not putting *trigger* warnings or feeling the need to put them up is ridiculous.

Yes PTSD exists, but like ADD and ADHD and OCD and Autism it is over diagnosed because people just want to say there is something wrong with themselves instead of working through their problems.

RE: Trigger warning! - M3116 - 03-23-2012 02:53 PM

I don't know. I think all of you should put "Trigger Warning" in your posts about school, because it definitely triggers me.

Eh, sometimes avoiding things you know you can't deal with at the moment is a first step to working through your problems.

Anyway, it's one thing to not want to put them on things yourself, but I don't see the point in being annoyed by other people doing it.

RE: Trigger warning! - Levio_Sah - 03-24-2012 05:52 AM

What's wrong with trigger warnings? I don't see how it effects you.

RE: Trigger warning! - cuttlefishCuller - 03-24-2012 08:17 AM

Trigger warnings are placed before material that could cause someone who has experienced a traumatic event to have violent reactions (flashbacks, anxiety attacks, the urge to self-harm or commit suicide). The material that causes this is called a "trigger". Something which seems mundane to you, such as a mention of rape, may be incredibly dangerous to someone else. Please don't be a cunt about it.

If mentioning rape causes you to freak out it is no one's fault but the rapists and yours. If you have "triggers" it is your own responsibility to avoid them. Like I said I have had some bad shit happen to me and frankly I laugh about the ridiculousness of it. It's over, I am free from the pain, what's the point of dwelling on it?

How are people supposed to avoid them if no one gives any signal that there's triggery material ahead? Rape and trauma victims aren't bestowed with telepathy that lets them detect triggers before they affect them.

It takes virtually no effort to tag something for triggers. Here's the breakdown;

Not tagged: Nothing happens to you, someone else suffers flashbacks and an anxiety attack

Tagged: You feel mild annoyance, someone else can avoid the material that would injure them

Why are you implying that we should put your needs before someone who'd be much more hurt? Frankly, that sounds incredibly selfish.

UnSchool you're being a dick. Just because you haven't been raped, doesn't mean that someone else wasn't. Just because you get annoyed by warnings, does not mean that we should remove them. Rape victims can easily get flashbacks, which can lead to potential suicide.

You want someone to commit suicide just because you're annoyed?

Yes they need to take control of their own shit.
Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but these rape victims want me to put some like *TRIGGER WARNING* every time I say a word that just might make them...what exactly? Scared they're about to get raped again? Sorry I just don't buy it.

RE: Trigger warning! - bulgarianlion - 03-25-2012 02:10 AM

Dude, you just don't understand. And yes, you aren't obliged to put that. It's up to your morals and values as a human being.

to put this plainly:

your way of handling things is not everyone else's. before blaming other victims for overreacting, try learning.

Did Bulgfag not even read my post? Something DID happen to me and I was over it quite quickly and generally tell it as a funny story. It is over, it is done, it was traumatic, but it ended and I am free from what it was. That is why he is on ignore.

Cuttlefish, it is not MY responsible to put tags for what I say. If something makes someone freak out or have a panic attack then it is THEIR responsibility to be on the look out for it while GETTING HELP. If reading something makes you freak out it is not normal and should be fixed and with effort it WILL go away.

Yea yea the whole "no one understands" or "only people like me understand" argument. Quite silly and it is a cop out.
